Written by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and illustrated by Cachetejack, “Prince” tells the story of one of the greatest musicians of all time.
As a part of the “Little People, BIG DREAMS” youth biography series, the book explores Prince’s humble beginnings and his likeness to his father, who was a musician.
Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince became a genius at writing, composing and arranging music. He wrote his first song at the age of 7, recorded his first album at 19 and played at least 27 instruments.
The book’s colorful illustrations bring Prince’s unique persona and creative expressions to life, taking the reader through a journey of what Prince enjoyed most — music and dance. The story vividly captures Prince’s time as a student at the Minnesota Dance Theater, as well as the artists and various styles of music that influenced Prince to be in a class of his own. Among those influences were female musicians in Prince’s band, who often became the inspiration for songs.
At one point during his career, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable one represented by a symbol, which combined the masculine and the feminine. The book provides illustrations of the symbol, noting he was “a free spirit that no one dared to label.”
As a free spirit refusing to let anyone else define him, Prince stood up for what he believed in. This book reminds children to be courageous and to keep persevering. It is an inspiring story for future musicians and beyond.
