COVID-19 Cases Latest Updates:

Six COVID-19 Metrics

There are 2-day lags in reporting COVID-19 test results due to incomplete reporting. Similarily, the actual number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the last seven days will likely be higher than what is currently reported.
A goal represents the level we are working to attain. A threshold indicates a level where citywide policy actions may be needed.

COVID-19 Positive Tests, All-Boston (7-day moving average):

This metric tells us how many new cases we're seeing each day and how quickly COVID-19 is spreading. Our goal is to be at 67.9 positive tests or less per day (10 cases per 100K residents). Our threshold for concern is 339.7 positive tests per day (50 cases per 100K residents).

Data through 12/20/2023 (updated 01/04/2024)

COVID-19 Test Positivity (7-day moving average)

This metric helps us understand if we're doing enough testing and if we're seeing widespread cases. The positivity calculation includes one negative test per seven days or one positive test per 90 days per individual. The positivity calculation includes one negative test per seven days per individual or one positive test per 90 days per individual. 1. Current Community Positivity excludes college-ordered tests. 2. Current All-Boston Positivity includes college-ordered tests.

Data through 12/21/2023 (updated 01/04/2024)

This metric helps us to understand whether we are performing a consistent amount of testing among Boston residents. Our goal is to attain a flat or increasing level of testing. Our threshold for concern is a decrease in overall testing for three or more consecutive weeks.

Data through 12/20/2023 (updated 01/04/2024)

Data through 12/22/2023 (updated 01/04/2024)

Occupied Adult Non-Surge ICU Beds at Boston Hospitals, All Patients (7-day moving average)

COVID-19 Metrics

We use the following COVID-19 metrics: Daily Number of Positive Tests; Daily Percent of Tests That Are Positive; and Daily COVID-19 Emergency Department Visits to Boston Hospitals. In addition to these metrics, we have added 3 additional metrics that allow us to better understand the current impact of COVID-19 activity in the City of Boston. These metrics are: COVID-19 Current Community Molecular Tests Performed; Percentage of Available Adult ICU and Adult Medical/Surgical Beds; and Percentage of Non-Surge Adult ICU Beds Occupied.

1. Current Community Positivity: This method of calculating the positivity excludes college-ordered tests. Boston's colleges and universities are conducting a large amount of recurring testing to ensure that they are able to identify any COVID-19 cases early. This amount of testing is not occurring among the general population. This calculation includes one negative test per seven days or one positive test per 90 days per individual.

2. Current All-Boston Positivity: This method includes all Boston tests, including colleges and universities. This calculation includes one negative test per seven days or one positive test per 90 days per individual.
