Unified Government Emergency Management Department - Awareness Information

Today kicks off Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

Monday, March 4th, 2024, kicks off Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The (UG) Emergency Management Department has partnered with the National Weather Service to provide information and tips to highlight different ways community residents and businesses can prepare for severe weather in the upcoming weeks and months.

The overall goal of Severe Weather Preparedness week is to help citizens understand the importance of severe weather and to take a moment to map out a plan of action on how they would respond to various weather threats. Each day residents can expect to see specific weather information and resources on the below outlined weather topics on the UG website and social media channels.

Monday:  Receiving Weather Information (Making a Plan)

We ask that you prepare your family and/ or business by creating a plan of action to ensure you receive notifications regarding weather updates.  This can include having a weather radio and having weather applications on your phone to update you in the event of an emergency in your area.

 2023 Weather Preparedness Days

Missouri and Kansas Statewide Severe Weather Tornado Drill: March 6th, 2024 at 11 AM CST  Tornado Pic

Residents should treat the drill as if it were an actual Tornado Warning. The purpose of the drill is to test everyone's readiness for life-threatening severe weather events such as tornadoes, flash floods, and damaging winds. Local officials are encouraged sound warning sirens to initiate the drill.

The National Weather Service will issue a Routine Weekly Test (RWT) to NOAA Weather Radios to initiate the drill.

NWS Kansas City/Pleasant Hill will advertise the tornado drill on our Twitter and Facebook accounts.  Local warning sirens and the NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio will be activated to signal the start of the drill.

The NWS encourages everyone to consider participating by simply sheltering-in-place or discussing sheltering options/plans among co-workers/family members.

The purpose of the drill is to test everyone's readiness for life-threatening severe weather events such as tornadoes, flash floods, and damaging winds. Local
officials may sound warning sirens to initiate the drill.
