They Had One Job—And Did It Spectacularly

Arguably Australia’s most famous Riesling, this Eden Valley bottling from Pewsey Vale sets the bar for radiant, effortlessly elegant New World expressions of the grape.

James Suckling crowned this platinum-hued effort with a resounding 96-point score, plugging it at the attention-grabbing #3 spot on his Top 100 Value Wines of 2020 list. That best-in-class praise comes on top of a pile of superlatives, including James Halliday’s five-star rating for the winery, and a declaration from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate that “Pewsey Vale remains Eden Valley’s premier name in Riesling.”

The only winery in the country to focus exclusively on Riesling, cultivated on a single legendary vineyard, it brings the full weight of 173 years of mastery to bear on this knockout bottle.

We’re fanatics about this label, and this time we hit the motherlode—their quintessential expression, the bottle that’s most open and ready for consumption out of the whole lineup, absolutely delicious and harmonious, yet thrillingly clean and dry as a bone.

The winery first made its mark on this part of the country back in 1847, when it became the pioneering vineyard planted in Eden Valley. Even then, in 1854, wine writers were declaring it “the best wine of its class ever imported.” Pewsey Vale was one of the original properties to showcase the fluidity and purity of cool-climate Rieslings in the country. Geoffrey Angas Parsons and Wyndham Hill-Smith took over in the 1970s, allowing the rocky, infertile soils and high elevation above the Barossa Valley to speak through the wine, with minimal human intervention.

Few wineries in the world bring this level of rigor and single-site focus to just one grape. No one does it at this price.
