Right Bank Tradition with Modern, Weeknight Appeal

Wine Advocate called this wine “a superb Bordeaux Supérieur!” and told readers it was definitely “worth hunting down.” That hunt can be tricky, since this deeply layered red is rarely imported to the US. But today our members get a rare shot—and a serious bounty lies in store for those who squeeze the trigger.

At this price, a month’s worth of the Fleur Haut Gaussens costs less than a bottle of most Parker-favorite Bordeaux.

This bottle first captured our attention when a somm friend brought it to a blind tasting dinner. The agreed-upon price limit was $50, but we suspect that some were showing off by bringing cellar-worthy Right Bank bottles to the party. But by the time the brown bags were pulled off the bottles, it was the Château Fleur Haut Gausses—not the pricey Pomerols and St.-Émilions—that had made the most waves.

That means this 2016 rouge won outright against wines three and four times its price. The results weren’t even close. The Fleur Haut Gaussens got nearly half the total first-place votes, more than double the next contender, a $45 Left Bank banger with name-brand pedigree. Only a handful of the guests had even heard of this wine.

This drinks exactly like a great Bordeaux Supérieur should. It's firmly rooted in the tradition of Pomerol and St.-Émilion but lifted by frankness and affability. Merlot takes a strong lead in this blend, supported by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. Displaying a cornucopia of crushed red and black fruits with a crushed-stone microtexture with a vibrant fruit profile, it had everyone wondering where they could get a bottle. And that was before they heard the price.

The result of a truly fantastic vintage, the 2016 bottles the radiant joy and energy of Bordeaux in a wine that can be crushed by the case.

This is the bottle of Bordeaux to elevate your weeknight dinner from good to awesome.
