'B-More Lit' series kicks off city's summer of events
On Monday night, Baltimore City kicked off its "B-More Lit Summer Series." It's a series of events where young people and their families can gather in a safe environment and enjoy fun activities throughout the summer.
Music, dancing and more could be seen and heard at Rash Field at the Inner Harbor on Memorial Day. It is part of the city's very first "B-More Lit Summer Series." An event to make sure young people have safe, fun and engaging activities throughout the summer.
"It feels hot, but it feels good though, it's nice to come outside and do something for Memorial Day," Briona Miller, who lives in the area and brought her child, said.
She said it's important for young people to have a safe place to gather and have fun over the summer.
"Just to show they care about what's happening, to give the kids something to do that's safe, that way they're not stuck inside or bored or turn to things they shouldn't be doing," Miller said.
There were DJs, live performers, food, nail technicians and more. One child's favorite thing was the video game truck, while one mother was just happy for the event.
"It's a blessing to be out here with me and my children," Tymiera Robinson said.
The event took place just days after someone shot and killed a teenager near the Inner Harbor over the weekend.
"That's why events like these are so important. We need to make sure we have adults that are around. We have our outreach workers from the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, Safe Streets is out, we have our Mayor's Office of African American Male Engagement, we also have Waterfront Partnership, so this is the entire community coming out to support our young people," Faith Leach, the deputy mayor of equity, health and human services, said.
She said it's their way of supporting families in the city and giving kids positive activities.
"We want to make sure our young people are able to gather in a safe environment, enjoy one another, and really experience all the beauty that is Baltimore," Leach said.
Several kids also got a free haircut. Xavier Keller is one of the barbers and said it's his way of giving back.
"Energy is transferrable, so if you help somebody look good and help somebody feel good about themselves then it can go a long way," Keller said while giving a child a haircut.
The city is planning to hold several more of these events at various locations throughout the city this summer. It's something that many families said they will be looking forward to.
"Bring (all of your) children out if you can, so they can get out in the community and have activities they can do. It's definitely a blessing," Robinson said.
