Birmingham VA Health Care System Psychology Training Program

Please see below for details.

Psychology Internship:

Birmingham VA currently offers an APA-accredited clinical psychology internship (with 4 positions funded through VA; APPIC Match #110113) as part of the UAB-BVAMC Consortium. The UAB Department of Psychiatry initiated a doctoral clinical psychology internship in 1965. Soon after, UAB joined forces with the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center to start the UAB-BVAMC Internship Consortium.  Due to significant growth in our psychology services at both institutions since the initiation of the consortium in the 1960s, we have begun the process of dissolving the consortium relationship. BVAMC and UAB are each seeking accreditation as independent internships. Birmingham VA is approved for a site visit in January-March 2024. We will remain an accredited consortium until independent accreditation is achieved. We are working closely with APA and are utilizing an option to independently apply for accreditation while we remain an accredited consortium. We will dissolve the consortium after independent accreditation has been achieved, while closely considering the timing in relation to our internship cohorts. While it’s true that big changes are coming to the consortium, one thing that has NOT changed is our commitment to high-quality psychology training.

While we will remain a consortium for at least part of the 2024-2025 training year, interns will complete all rotations within their matched site—either BVAMC or UAB, and any performance improvement plans, probation/termination decisions, or grievances will be handled internally within the matched site. All consortium interns participate in a weekly didactic seminar together.

Consortium Selection Information:

A separate committee of internship training staff from each track reviews and evaluates each application. In your cover letter, please clearly indicate whether you are applying for the Birmingham VA track, a UAB Psychiatry track (Neuropsychology, Behavioral Medicine, or General), and/or the UAB Child Track. You may apply for more than one track within the consortium but should clearly indicate your fit for each track and rotations of interest. If selected for interviews, you will receive separate invitations from each track. All interviews will be conducted virtually (via video-based conferencing platforms). There will not be an on-site interview option or open house.  For questions regarding the VA track, please contact Dr. Misti Norton, Training Director, at Misti.Norton@va.gov or Dr. Anna Grace Cooper, Assistant Training Director, at AnnaG.Cooper@va.gov.
