ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a proposal of identification and characterisation of the different types of Social and solidarity-economy organisations (SSEO) in the Argentinian context by classifying them into five main models. These are workers' self-managed organisations; entities of the traditional social economy; cooperatives for social inclusion related to state policies; social businesses led by social entrepreneurs; and associative and family popular initiatives. The chapter presents a brief historical framework of the Argentinian economy and an account of the emergence of the concepts and experiences that make up the field of the social and solidarity economy in the country. It deals with some considerations regarding the particularities of Argentinian SSEOs in an international perspective, and their prospects in the national and Latin American context. Workers' self-managed SSEOs are an emergent political player, with a certain capacity of organisation and mobilisation both to resist neoliberal policies and to foster the development of strategies towards an alternative economy.
