Summary

This dataset includes a subset of previously released pesticide data (Morace and others, 2020) from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Assessment Program (NAWQA) Regional Stream Quality Assessment (RSQA) project and the corresponding hazard index results calculated using the R package toxEval, which are relevant to Mahler and others, 2020. Pesticide and transformation products were analyzed at the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. Files are grouped as pesticides (parent compounds), transformation products (degradate compounds), compounds with no Acute Invertebrate (AI) benchmarks, compounds with no Acute Non-Vascular Plant (ANVP) benchmarks, and compounds not evaluated through the toxEval [...]

Purpose

Over 200 pesticide and (or) transformation product compounds were evaluated by the USGS NAWQA program’s nationwide RSQA project from 2013-17. Results from these analyses documented the presence of pesticide compounds in 89% of streams sampled. The data released herein were employed by Mahler and others (2020) to quantify the risk of acute and chronic exposures to these potentially toxic substances based on established Aquatic Life Benchmarks (ALB) or molecular bioassay activity endpoints (EPA ToxCast database). Hazard index (HI) ratios were calculated for those compounds with existing ALB or ToxCast data, but corresponding benchmarks or bioactivity metrics were not available for more than half of the detected compounds. The HI associated with detected concentrations of the latter were estimated based on equimolar substitution of the parent pesticide. The framework for that process is presented herein.
