About the Recovery Summit:

Taking place during National Recovery Month, this webinar series will include sessions related to the nation-wide drug crisis, substance use recovery, and the effects on the state of Michigan and St. Clair County. Webinar sessions will provide an examination of current efforts, local statistics, treatment approaches, the recovery process, impacts on family systems, and prevention strategies. This event will bring together physicians, healthcare workers, human service professionals, law enforcement officers, school personnel, local government officials, first responders, the recovery community and others to continue to address this serious public health issue. There is no cost to participate in webinar sessions and attendees may register for as many as they choose. Supported by funds from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Overview
Michigan is expected to receive over $1.5 billion from national settlements with opioid manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies. This presentation will provide an overview of the settlement landscape and information regarding work taking place around settlements across the state. Speakers will include representatives from the Opioid Advisory Commission, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and Michigan Association of Counties.
Bio
Patrick graduated from Imlay City in 1998 and received his Bachelor’s degree in business from Western Michigan University in 2003. He served 10 years as the financial services manager for Michigan’s Largest 401(k) provider. He is currently the Executive Director for BWROC, the Blue Water Recovery and Outreach Center where he co-authored the State's first recovery support services Bill and uses his past struggle with addiction to help others. Patrick co-chairs the Michigan Recovery Community Collective to help improve policy for recovery communities across Michigan. Patrick also serves as a key driver for hope, advocacy and change in our national fight against addiction. Amy Dolinky joined MAC in 2022 as the Technical Adviser, Opioid Settlement Funds Planning and Capacity Building. Prior to joining MAC, she served as a Senior Program Manager, Overdose Data to Action with the CDC Foundation and as the Senior Adviser of Michigan’s Opioid Strategy with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Previously, Dolinky served as the Substance Misuse Response Coordinator, leading strategic planning around substance use with Knox County government in Tennessee and as a Regional Director with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. She holds a master’s degree in public policy and administration with a focus on global health from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Loyola University New Orleans. Brandon Hool is a Technical Advisor on the Opioid Settlement Funds with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Prior to that, he spent 4 years with the MDHHS Viral Hepatitis Unit as a Harm Reduction Analyst, supporting the expansion of harm reduction services across the state. Brandon had an extensive professional and personal history in the substance use disorder field before coming to MDHHS. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in community development from Central Michigan University in 2018 and a Master’s in Public Health in 2022.

Addiction 101 is a crash course in substance use prevention, addiction, and recovery. The workshop is divided into three parts: Part one is intended to reduce stigma surrounding substance use by sharing a personal story of addiction and recovery. Part two focuses on the most significant risk factors for substance use and substance use disorders and describes how these lead to characteristic, protracted changes in the brain. Finally, part three offers mounting evidence for the need to treat addiction as a chronic disorder.
Bio
Dr. Alex Elswick is a tireless advocate for people with substance use disorders. He currently serves the University of Kentucky as an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist for Substance Use Prevention and Recovery. Alex is a trained researcher, recovery coach, and mental health therapist, as well as the co-founder of Voices of Hope, a peer-driven recovery community organization. But most importantly, Alex is himself a person in long term recovery from the chronic disease of addiction.

Alyse Nichols is the Outreach Coordinator at the St. Clair County Health Department in Port Huron, MI. Throughout her time working in public health, she has educated the community on a variety of topics such as infant safe sleep, teen pregnancy prevention, youth substance use, and COVID-19. Prior to her life in public health, Nichols spent extensive time working in higher education that included a two-year term in AmeriCorps where she served as a college advisor in rural West Michigan. Nichols holds a master’s degree in public health from Grand Valley State University, and a bachelor’s degree in social relations and policy from Michigan State University. Bio
Dr. Daniel Clauw is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine (Rheumatology) and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. He attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Michigan, following which he did an Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship at Georgetown University. He stayed at Georgetown as a faculty member from 1990 – 2002, serving as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology and Vice Chair of Medicine. While at Georgetown he founded the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center (CPFRC), and in 2002 was recruited to bring this group to the University of Michigan, where the group has become one of the most successful pain research groups in the world. He also served as the first PI of the University of Michigan Clinical and Translational Sciences Award (CTSA), as well as the first Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research, and founded the institute that houses the UM CTSA, the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research. He has over 450 peer-reviewed publications, over $100M in federal funding, and is very active mentor, serving as the primary mentor for 39 NIH K awardees, nearly all of whom have gone on to obtain R series funding or the equivalent.

He has a masters in psychology from Montana State University Billings and a masters in clinical mental health counseling from Walden University. In the community Mr. Heuvelman works as an advocate for the expansion of access to behavioral health treatment and for innovative approaches to reduce the community impact of opioid overdose. She is also the content expert in cannabis for the CDC-funded Injury Prevention Center at University of Michigan and part of the leadership team for the Advancing Addiction Care, Research, and Education program at the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry.

SAMHSA has a long history of supporting recovery services and peer support. This presentation provides an overview of our programs and policies and how SAMHSA partners with people in recovery from behavioral health issues to guide a systems level approach that fosters recovery and resiliency.
Bio
Currently serving as the Senior Advisor in the Office of Recovery, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Dona supports recovery initiatives across the agency. In her previous role, she served as the Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention where Dona provided executive leadership for federal efforts to improve the nation’s behavioral health through evidence-based substance use prevention approaches. Ms. Dmitrovic is an experienced executive with over 35 years in the substance use field. She has experience in raising public awareness and supporting program development and implementation for individuals with mental health and substance use conditions through advocacy, policy, and program development. Most importantly, Ms. Dmitrovic has lived experience of long-term recovery and is a family member of loved ones in recovery. This personal experience drives her passion to ensure opportunities exist to support others’ path to wellness. Prior to her arrival at SAMHSA, she served as the Executive Director of Foundation for Recovery in Las Vegas, NV, where she developed and implemented peer recovery support programs, education and training on peer support services and led the organization’s growth to a statewide agency. Ms. Dmitrovic also held the position of Director, National Office of Consumer Affairs for Optum Behavioral Health, UnitedHeathcare. There she used her vast experience to develop peer products and tools to support individuals with substance use disorders. As the Chief Operating Officer for the RASE Project in Pennsylvania, Ms. Dmitrovic assisted the CEO, launching the Buprenorphine Coordinator program serving opioid dependent individuals with recovery support services in medication assisted treatment (MAT); one of the first in the country which received two national awards for innovation. Dona was also the Director of Education and Advocacy at Johnson Institute in Washington, DC and the first Executive Director of Pennsylvania Recovery Organizations Alliance, the statewide recovery community organization in Harrisburg, PA.

This workshop offers an overview of Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention which incorporates empirically supported interventions from Relapse Prevention Therapy (RPT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). It highlights the primary goals and overall themes of MBRP. The training will provide brief opportunities for mindfulness practice through interactive exercises. Due to needing an experiential understanding of mindfulness, it is important for clinicians to have their own on-going mindfulness practice.

Michelle Boudreaux, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, Member of MINT, has been providing mental health and co-occurring services since 1996. She has provided direct services and has had oversight of many evidence-based practices (IDDT, MI, DBT, FPE, IPS, Recovery Illness and Management, Integrated Healthcare, etc.) for many years within the community mental health system. Debra Johnson is the CEO of St. Clair County Community Mental Health, a position she began in January 2013. Since starting with SCCCMH in 1988 as a case manager, Ms. Johnson has held many positions at SCCCMH ranging from Case Manager to Director. Jim Johnson is CEO of Region 10 Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan, a position he has held since December 2016. Prior to this, Mr. Johnson was the Executive Director at Sanilac County Community Mental Health. He has also held positions at St. Clair County Community Mental Health and Professional Counseling Center since receiving his Master’s in Social Work degree from Wayne State University. Ken Heuvelman is a Clinical Coordinator at Odyssey House. He has worked in many diverse fields, including providing direct SUD and mental health services since 2014. Mr. Heuvelman received his Bachelor’s Degree from University of Michigan Flint and two Master’s Degrees from Montana State University Billings and Walden University. Mat King is Sheriff at the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, a position he started in November 2020. Mr. King began his career with the SCC Sheriff’s Department in 1998, working his way up to Captain prior to his election as Sheriff. Liz King has worked at the St. Clair County Health Department for the past 20 years. She currently serves as the Health Officer, a position she started in July 2022. Prior to this position, Ms. King has worked in a variety of roles at the SCC Health Department, including Nursing Supervisor and Nursing & Community Health Director
