Sen. Lawson’s bill to expand RI Promise scholarship program for ‘care economy’ degrees to be heard by Senate Finance Committee tomorrow

STATE HOUSE – Sen. Valarie J. Lawson’s (D-Dist. 14, East Providence) bill which expands the RI Promise scholarship program to students at Rhode Island College (RIC) for their last two years of study when attaining a degree in the “care economy” is set to be heard by the Senate Finance Committee tomorrow, March 23 at the RISE of the Senate in the Senate Lounge.
“While our state suffers from a significant crisis of care, this bill will not only train and educate the future workers of the care economy, it will also help fill the serious and dangerous gap in necessary healthcare and human services workers that our state is currently facing. This bill is an investment in the health and well-being of our state’s residents and I urge my colleagues in the General Assembly to support its passage,” said Senator Lawson.
Eligible areas of study for the scholarship expansion are chemical dependency/addiction studies, community and public health promotion, early childhood education, elementary education, elementary education with concentration in special education, health care administration, health sciences, medical imaging, nursing, secondary education, social work, special education, and youth development.
The legislation (2022-S 2591) also would extend the RI Promise scholarship program to students who are unable to meet the criteria set forth in the scholarship obligations due to medical or personal leave, military obligations or disabilities.
