Gov. Sisolak, VA official praise Reno's VA hospital for pandemic response, mental health care

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak and Deputy Secretary of Veteran Affairs Donald Remy toured Reno's VA Sierra Health Care System Wednesday morning. 

Sisolak praised the health center's staff for providing thousands of COVID-19 vaccinations to patients and for providing mental health care to veterans.

Remy also commended the health center's program that celebrates women veterans and the important of mental health care. 

"We remain ever-vigilant and ever-committed to ensuring that our veteran community has all the resources that we have available to them," Remy said. "One veteran suicide is one veteran suicide too many."

Remy also said that he is proud of the work that Reno's VA medical center is doing, but like other VA medical centers across the country, has room for improvement. 

Remy was nominated to by President Joe Biden and the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination in July.

Remy was a captain in the Army, and he grew up in a family with a long tradition of military service. His father is a retired Army master sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. Remy's brother, uncle, late father-in-law and many other family members and close friends are veterans.

"We're here to serve our veterans and we're here to make sure our facilities are able to serve those veterans the way they deserve to be served," Remy said.
