United States Chemical Weapons Stockpile Destruction

The Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives, or PEO ACWA, was responsible for the safe and environmentally compliant destruction of the remaining U.S. chemical weapons stockpile, completed July 7, 2023.

PEO ACWA completed destruction of the chemical weapons stockpile at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado in June 2023 and at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky in July 2023. PEO ACWA is now responsible for the closure of the Pueblo and Blue Grass plants.

Chemical Weapons Stockpile Destruction Complete in Colorado

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, or PCAPP, safely destroyed mustard agent-filled artillery projectiles and mortar rounds at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot in Pueblo, Colorado, which originally stored 2,613 U.S. tons of chemical agent. On June 22, 2023, the last munition in the chemical weapons stockpile in Colorado was destroyed in the Static Detonation Chamber complex. The Pueblo plant is transitioning into the closure phase.

Chemical Weapons Stockpile Destruction Complete in Kentucky

The Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, or BGCAPP, safely destroyed the nerve agents VX and GB (sarin) in projectiles and rockets and mustard agent in projectiles at the Blue Grass Army Depot near Richmond, Kentucky, which originally stored 523 U.S. tons of chemical agent. On July 7, 2023, the last munition in the chemical weapons stockpile in Kentucky was destroyed in the main plant. This also marked the complete destruction of the declared U.S. stockpile. The Blue Grass plant is now in the closure phase.
