With the coronavirus continuing to spread in communities across the United States, and an expected second wave in the fall, many advocates are pushing for states to implement mail-in voting across the board so people don’t have to put their health at risk to vote. Against the advice of his own people, and without evidence, President Trump and his supporters claim that absentee ballots will increase voter fraud. To be clear, voter fraud largely does not exist in the United States, and mail-in ballots do not contribute to it. However, many states already have widespread use of mail-in ballots without any issue. Trump himself said that the reason why he opposes vote by mail is “you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”
Many Republican leaders who show the most vehement opposition to allowing people to vote by mail actually vote by mail themselves. Voting by mail has been implemented in several states like California and Nevada without problem. The government has no place impeding their access to ballots.
Republicans have insisted that their opposition to voting by mail is grounded in an effort to maintain the integrity of our elections. However, President Trump lays out exactly where the opposition comes from: It “doesn’t work out well for Republicans.”
Here’s a sampling of the arguments against mail-in voting some Trump supporters have been making alongside Trump. Keep in mind, the claims of voter fraud are not backed up by evidence — it rarely happens in the United States.
