Johnstown protesters call for legalized home-growing of medical marijuana to reduce costs

A medical cannabis “grow-test” – as in a “growing” “protest” – took place at Johnstown’s Central Park on Saturday afternoon.

Organizers of the event want to bring changes to Pennsylvania's program that legalized marijuana for medical use. Most specifically, they want patients to be allowed to grow their own plants, which would provide a cost savings.

“It’s way too expensive for most of us,” Tom Venditti said.

Venditti said allowing users to raise their own plants could be beneficial during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Let people grow and basically work together to get through this very, very difficult time,” Venditti said. “We’ve got to work against greed. Greed is destroying the medical cannabis business.”

The gathering included a musical performance by Anthony Cromer, stage name Tony Dahdonn, the founder and owner of 1984 Music Group.

“Our message is to actually let people grow,” he said. “We started a hashtag movement. I’d say it’s been going on for about a month and some change now.”
