Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District

The Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District was designated by the State of Maryland on December 31, 2001.  At that time Silver Spring became one of the four districts selected for Maryland’s inaugural implementation of the new initiative to enhance business development through the development of the arts.  Much has changed over the past ten years and our Arts and Entertainment District has thrived.  Silver Spring is now home to over 50 arts or humanities organizations, businesses, educational groups, museums, etc.

Within a year of the designation Montgomery County Government and the Silver Spring Regional Center (the managing entity for the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District) and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District took several strides forward in the marketing and promotion of the district to celebrate the arrival of our new anchors to the district.  The American Film Institute opened its premier east coast venue at the AFI Silver Theatre with a star studded evening of bright lights, luminaries, literati, and Hollywood personalities including Clint Eastwood.  Just weeks later the Round House Theatre opened its new ‘black box’ venue to offer shows performed by equity players in a location beside the AFI Silver; and cable television powerhouse Discovery Communications, Inc. moved into the A&E district.

These anchors encouraged other similar organizations to make the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District their home over the next ten years. We are now home to several additional theaters and theater groups including The Regal Majestic, a multiplex cinema with twenty screens for first run, mainstream movies; the Silver Spring Black Box, a consortium of four theater groups including Forum, Lumina, Live Garra, and ArtStream; Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center; Highwood Theatre; The Fillmore; Potters Violin; and Round House Educational Center.
