Servicemembers may not realize they have a chance to get a head start on their post-uniform career plans – and not just by updating a résumé or practicing an elevator pitch.

The DoD SkillBridge program allows those leaving service to participate in internships, apprenticeships, or other industry-specific training during their last 180 days in uniform. This opportunity can provide a leg up on a civilian profession, but participants will need to do some prep work to meet requirements and receive approvals.

MOAA recently partnered with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness on an information-packed webinar discussing the SkillBridge program, with key tips coming straight from Gary Schaub, senior advisor for Professional Military Education in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

If you missed the webinar, click here to register and receive a link to watch the recording. Schaub covers a range of information about the program, including:

  • How and when to apply for the program, including eligibility rules.
  • Approvals and logistics related to the program, including how to ensure there are no conflicts of interest or other ethical concerns as you leave service.
  • What to expect if you’re accepted into the program.

Schaub also covered how employers can become SkillBridge partners, a process which includes extensive DoD vetting. Employers should provide a high probability of employment for trainees; more information for prospective partners can be found at this link.

A recent search of SkillBridge opportunities returned nearly 5,000 results across a range of industries. Review the listing to see what could be the right fit for you – use the search functionality to sort by type of job, location, length of training, and many more variables.

Remember, the training is available only to those about to leave uniform. If you’ve already transitioned, consider MOAA’s Job Board, powered by Indeed.com, as a first stop for your career search.
