What are Maine’s policies for visitors traveling from out-of-state or Maine residents traveling to other states?

Maine no longer requires proof of a negative test or quarantine for travelers to the state. 

If one or more states see a spike in cases of highly contagious COVID-19 variants, Maine will apply its test or quarantine requirement to travelers to and from that state. The Maine CDC will publicly announce any such states when they are identified. 

What are Maine's policies on wearing face coverings?
  • Effective May 24, Maine aligned with U.S. CDC guidance to allow fully vaccinated individuals to not wear face coverings indoors
  • Effective July 1, face coverings are no longer required for those 5 years of age and older in indoor school and childcare settings.
  • Maine CDC recommends that anyone who is not fully vaccinated continues to wear a face covering in public indoor settings.
  • US CDC requires that people wear face coverings in all forms of public transportation, such as planes, buses, and trains.
  • US CDC specifically recommends that people wear face coverings in healthcare settings and in congregate living settings like jails and shelters.

What are Maine’s policies for international travelers coming to Maine?  

For fully vaccinated travelers to Maine:

  • Vaccinated international travelers do not need to quarantine on their arrival to Maine unless they are symptomatic.
  • Vaccinated international travelers who are asymptomatic do not need to be tested.

For travelers to Maine who are not fully vaccinated:

  • Unvaccinated international travelers should quarantine for 7 days since their arrival into the U.S.
  • Unvaccinated, asymptomatic international travelers should be tested if their arrival in Maine is within 3-5 days of their arrival into the U.S. (Find a Maine testing site here.)

Vaccination

Can visitors get vaccinated in Maine? 

Yes. For more on vaccination in Maine, visit Maine’s COVID-19 vaccine site. 

For those traveling through - or able to access - the Portland International Jetport (PWM), Maine CDC offers a daily vaccination clinic there from noon to 8 p.m. for anyone 18 and older looking to get vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson. No appointments needed. 

What is considered fully vaccinated? 

You are considered fully vaccinated after at least 14 days following the completion of your COVID-19 vaccination series. For individuals who receive the two-shot Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, this starts after the second dose. For individuals receiving the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine, this starts after the single dose.
