Do you know Darryl Mills? He was a Deputy Commander, and I was just a Corporal under his command. A year after my release, we met at a Pathfinder Leadership Associates Inc. event. Darryl extended his hand and said, "Hey Justin, I'm glad to finally meet you." At that time, I couldn't help but wonder if it was just officer talk. How could he possibly remember me? Fast forward three months, and we found ourselves seated at the same table during a formal dinner. One of the dinner guests inquired about the impressive array of medals on Darryl's uniform (and there were many). With humility and grace, Darryl looked at his medals, then raised his eyes and said, "I'd rather Justin start because I am truly inspired by his service." Mine!!! Here was a man who had led Task Force Central, multiple combat tours, faced countless challenges, survived a helicopter crash in a combat zone, and held esteemed titles like Ranger and Special Forces Leader. Yet, it was my service that inspired him. This is Darryl—a humble leader who consistently goes above and beyond to make everyone around him feel valued, special, and optimistic about their potential. Today, I consider myself fortunate to have Darryl as a coach and mentor.
