When Yang Ni and Xiaoqing Li arrived in New Haven from China in 1987 to pursue degrees at Southern Connecticut State University, they had little in the way of possessions, but they had their great friends Lillian and the late Irving Rosenthal. The Rosenthals opened their home to Yang and Xiaoqing while they completed their master’s degrees. To honor their lifelong friends, Yang and Xiaoqing have established the Lillian and Irving Rosenthal Fund at CFGNH to provide one annual scholarship to a student at Gateway Community College and another to a student at SCSU. Established in 1928, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the US and remains the largest grantmaker in South Central Connecticut. Donors maximize their investments by using The Foundation’s expertise in managing funds and strategies to identify and meet community needs and opportunities. Throughout the year, The Foundation holds community-wide convenings and disseminates informational briefs on a wide range of topics of importance to Greater New Haven's residents. At Huneebee Project, adolescents and young adults practice mindfulness while developing vocational and entrepreneurial skills through the art of beekeeping. With support from CFGNH, Huneebee Project has hired a lead beekeeper and trainer, tripled the number of students served, and more than quadrupled its honey production over the past year. Breastfeeding mothers need safe and clean places to nurse their infants or pump when they are outside the home, yet there are only 60 breastfeeding-friendly worksites in all of Connecticut. New Haven Healthy Start, a program of CFGNH, is working to increase this number. In partnership with The New Haven Breast/Chestfeeding Task Force, New Haven Healthy Start helped fund the creation of a new lactation and wellness room at Union Station.
