Largest wholesale water supplier & second largest hydroelectric power producer in U.S., operating in 17 western states

About us

The Bureau of Reclamation (U.S. Department of the Interior) - Established in 1902, the Bureau of Reclamation is best known for the dams, powerplants and canals it constructed in the 17 western states. These water projects led to homesteading and promoted the economic development of the West. Reclamation has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and Grand Coulee on the Columbia River. Today, we are the largest wholesaler of water in the country. We bring water to more than 31 million people, and provide one out of five Western farmers (140,000) with irrigation water for 10 million acres of farmland that produce 60% of the nation's vegetables and 25% of its fruits and nuts. Flowing across 1,500 miles, two countries, 30 Tribal Nations and seven states, the Colorado River is more than a river—it’s the lifeblood of the West. Vital for supporting agricultural communities, businesses and cities, it also provides carbon-free, renewable hydropower while sustaining plant and animal life at every bend in the river. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton shares how we’re deploying $2.9 billion (to date) from the President’s #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw and #InflationReductionAct to fund 400 projects that will help conserve water, including the Colorado River Basin. We’re using this funding to evaluate projects that will build long-term system efficiency – like lining canals, restoring aquatic ecosystems, and increasing water efficiency. Discover how our collaborative efforts are shaping a sustainable future for the #ColoradoRiver. Watch now to learn more! Today, we extend our deepest gratitude to Terrence Sam, a dedicated program analyst and Assistant Title XVI Coordinator at the Lower Colorado Basin, Southern California Area Office. Terrence’s commitment to excellence is evident not only in his current role but also in his distinguished 14-year service in the U.S. Navy. As an Electrician’s Mate Chief Petty Officer, Terrence played a crucial role in the engineering department, ensuring the generation and distribution of power across the entire ship. His expertise was pivotal aboard the USS Texas (SSN-775), USS Freedom (LCS-1), USS Fort Worth (LCS-3), and USS Tripoli (LHA-7), where he qualified as an Engineering Officer of The Watch. In this capacity, he supervised the engineering plant, managing propulsion, fuel transfers, water production, sewage discharge, and A/C unit operation—all simultaneously with unparalleled skill. The skills and knowledge Terrence honed during his naval career, such as understanding complex systems like generators and reverse osmosis, along with program management, teamwork, and organizational abilities, have been invaluable in his role with Reclamation. We are proud to have Terrence as part of our team and honor his service, which reflects the highest standards of the Navy and our nation. Thank you, Terrence, for your unwavering dedication and for setting an inspiring example for us all. #MilitaryAppreciation #VeteranSuccess

Bartlett Dam was the first dam built on the Verde River in Arizona, and was completed May 9, 1939. The design is a reinforced concrete multiple arch and buttress dam, stands 308.5 feet high and 800 feet long, and was the highest multiple-arch dam in the world at the time. It consists of 10 arches, 9 buttresses, and 2 gravity wing dams. The purpose of the dam was to provide flood control and a reservoir of irrigation water for residents of the Salt River Valley and the Salt River Indian Reservation. #Reclamation101

In recognition of extraordinary heroism and unwavering courage, we salute Dave Arend, Deputy Regional Director for the Lower Colorado Basin Region. On August 22, 2022, amidst rush hour chaos, Arend selflessly intervened to save a life. As a distraught individual teetered on the brink of despair on the Galleria Drive overpass in Henderson, Nevada, Arend didn't hesitate. He navigated through traffic to engage the troubled soul. With compassion and perseverance, Arend maintained dialogue and offered reassurance until first responders arrived, guiding the individual to safety. His actions embody the values of professional excellence, safety, and respect, reflecting immense credit upon himself, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Department of the Interior. For his unparalleled bravery and compassion, Arend has received the Valor Award of the Department of the Interior. 🙌 #ValorAward #Hero #CourageousActs If someone you know is in crisis call or text 988 or visit https://988lifeline.org/

In the wake of the 1951 floods that brought devastation to Kansas and Missouri, the Glen Elder Dam was approved under the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program to build a monumental structure that was not just built to tame the waters but to nurture life through flood control and irrigation for the region. Reclamation’s commitment to safety and sustainability has never been stronger as BOR geologists have meticulously mapped and inspected the foundation rocks - Greenhorn Limestone and Graneros Shale - ensuring the dam’s integrity for generations to come. Geologic areas of concern such as fractures and slip planes were documented as new materials and being laid for a state-of-the-art concrete spillway slab.
