Flowing across 1,500 miles, two countries, 30 Tribal Nations and seven states, the Colorado River is more than a river—it’s the lifeblood of the West. Vital for supporting agricultural communities, businesses and cities, it also provides carbon-free, renewable hydropower while sustaining plant and animal life at every bend in the river. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton shares how we’re deploying $2.9 billion (to date) from the President’s #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw and #InflationReductionAct to fund 400 projects that will help conserve water, including the Colorado River Basin. We’re using this funding to evaluate projects that will build long-term system efficiency – like lining canals, restoring aquatic ecosystems, and increasing water efficiency. Are you getting ready to do some planting this spring? So are the biologists of the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program! 👩🌾🌱 These Fremont cottonwood and honey mesquite trees will be planted at the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge to cultivate a mosaic of native habitat for the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher, yellow-billed cuckoo, and several other native species.

Bartlett Dam was the first dam built on the Verde River in Arizona, and was completed May 9, 1939. The design is a reinforced concrete multiple arch and buttress dam, stands 308.5 feet high and 800 feet long, and was the highest multiple-arch dam in the world at the time. It consists of 10 arches, 9 buttresses, and 2 gravity wing dams. The purpose of the dam was to provide flood control and a reservoir of irrigation water for residents of the Salt River Valley and the Salt River Indian Reservation. #Reclamation101

On August 22, 2022, amidst rush hour chaos, Arend selflessly intervened to save a life. As a distraught individual teetered on the brink of despair on the Galleria Drive overpass in Henderson, Nevada, Arend didn't hesitate. He navigated through traffic to engage the troubled soul. With compassion and perseverance, Arend maintained dialogue and offered reassurance until first responders arrived, guiding the individual to safety. His actions embody the values of professional excellence, safety, and respect, reflecting immense credit upon himself, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Department of the Interior. In the wake of the 1951 floods that brought devastation to Kansas and Missouri, the Glen Elder Dam was approved under the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program to build a monumental structure that was not just built to tame the waters but to nurture life through flood control and irrigation for the region. Reclamation’s commitment to safety and sustainability has never been stronger as BOR geologists have meticulously mapped and inspected the foundation rocks - Greenhorn Limestone and Graneros Shale - ensuring the dam’s integrity for generations to come. Geologic areas of concern such as fractures and slip planes were documented as new materials and being laid for a state-of-the-art concrete spillway slab.
