'Plastics extend beyond an imminent environmental issue; they present a grave threat to human health as alarming as climate change. As plastics break down into microplastics, they release toxic chemicals into our food and water sources and circulate through the air we breathe. Scientists believe that microplastics in our bodies may be responsible for everything from cancer to autism to Alzheimer's to birth defects to falling fertility rates. Plastic production now has grown to more than 380 million tons per year. Canada's 2024 Federal budget, tabled yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, outlines the government’s measures to address housing affordability, support younger generations, and promote economic growth. Key initiatives include unlocking nearly 3.9 million homes by 2031, enhancing student housing support, ensuring everyday cost affordability, and boosting Canada’s AI ecosystem. Funding to support this $52 billion in new spending over the next five years will come from a mix of tax adjustments, sin taxes on vaping products, general spending, borrowing, and anticipated economic growth. Most notably, the tax measures include an increase to the inclusion rate on capital gains realized annually from $250,000 by individuals, and on all capital gains realized by corporations and trusts, from one-half to two-thirds, effective June 25, 2024. As a counter to the impact on Canadian entrepreneurs, the Budget also proposes to introduce the Canadian Entrepreneurs’ Incentive to reduce the tax rate on capital gains from the disposition of qualifying shares by an eligible individual. Specifically, this incentive would provide for a capital gains inclusion rate that is one-half the prevailing inclusion rate, on up to $2 million in capital gains per individual over their lifetime. How do we get from lambs to bunnies and easter eggs? The earliest reference to the Easter Bunny dates back to before the 17th century when Germanic people introduced the Osterhase—a rabbit that brought gifts to children during Easter. The concept of the Easter bunny is intertwined the spring equinox and the goddess of fertility, Eostre, who was symbolized by a hare and eggs. German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s brought their tradition of an egg-laying hare. Their children made nests for this creature to lay its colored eggs, eventually evolving into the colorful Easter baskets we see today. Reminiscent of last year's announcement regarding the Underused Housing Tax returns, “in recognition that the new reporting requirements for bare trusts have had an unintended impact for Canadians,” the CRA announced this afternoon that it will not require bare trusts to file a T3 information return including Schedule 15 for the 2023 taxation year, unless the CRA makes a direct request for these filings. "Over the coming months, the CRA will work with the Department of Finance to further clarify its guidance on this filing requirement."
