OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington State Senator Mike Padden announced he will not seek reelection for the 4th Legislative District seat this year.

"It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve our 4th District in the state Senate these past dozen years," Padden said. "After much thought and discussion with my wife, Laura, I have decided it is time to retire from office."

The longtime Republican focused his work primarily on public safety, anti-abortion laws and impaired driving.

"While I have focused on many issues, public safety has been especially important to me throughout my years as a legislator," Padden said.

Padden has served the Washington State Senate for 13 years and a combined 28 legislative sessions in his career.

He is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, five sons and four grandchildren.

After his announcement, Mike Kelly declared his candidacy with endorsement from Padden into the race for his seat.

"Spokane Valley businessman Mike Kelly will be a strong conservative voice for all of the 4th Legislative District. His life experiences have prepared him well to work effectively with Senators of both parties," Padden said.

Kelly is a well-known conservative figure in the Spokane Valley.

"I am dedicated to advocating for the people of District 4, representing our shared values, and staunchly defending parental rights," said Kelly. "My focus will be on protecting families and safeguarding the interests of the citizens of Washington State."
