2 quakes shake Northern California less than 12 hours apart
THREE NEWS. WELL, TODAY WE’RE SEEING THE IMPACT FROM YESTERDAY’S EARTHQUAKE AROUND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. AND GRASS VALLEY. IT TOOK MANY PEOPLE BY SURPRISE. THERE WAS NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE IN PLUMAS COUNTY. THE MOMENT THE QUAKE HIT WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERAS BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE PLUMAS LAKE RESORTS RESTAURANT. ONCE THE SHAKING STOP, THE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT BEGAN IN KIND OF A BIG MESS THERE. SENT BOTTLES FLYING OFF STOCK ROOM SHELVES, STORAGE RACKS, TUMBLING BOTTLES ON THE GROUND, SMASH. BUT IT JUST OPENED FOR THE SEASON YESTERDAY. AND THEN THAT QUAKE HIT IN THE AFTERNOON ABOUT 419. NO ONE WAS HURT AT THE RESORT, WHICH IS THE GREAT NEWS. NOW, METEOROLOGIST DIRK VERDOORN IS MONITORING THE EARTHQUAKES THAT WE HAD BECAUSE WE HAD ANOTHER ONE THIS MORNING, CORRECT? YEAH, WE HAD WELL, WE’VE HAD LOTS OF THEM. I MEAN, THERE’S BEEN DOZENS OF EARTHQUAKES, BUT THE TWO BIG ONES WERE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND THEN EARLY, EARLY THIS MORNING. SO, AGAIN, WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT IS PLUMAS COUNTY AND THE LOCATION, PLUMAS COUNTY, AND IT’S NORTHERN PLUMAS COUNTY NEAR LAKE ALMANOR. NOW, HERE’S A USGS MAP THAT SHOWS YOU THE LAKE ITSELF. AND YOU CAN SEE WHERE ALL OF THE EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN. NOW, ALL THIS NOW IS STARTING TO KIND OF TAPER OFF A BIT. WE HAD LOTS OF EARTHQUAKES THROUGH THE MORNING. AND IN FACT, THE LATEST ONE, THE MORE RECENT ONE THAT WE HAD WAS A 3.1. THAT WAS AT ABOUT 951 THIS MORNING. SO SINCE THEN HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING NEW HAPPENING. BUT THIS WAS WHERE THE FIRST ONE OCCURRED YESTERDAY. AND THIS WAS AT 4:19 P.M., 5.5. THAT WAS A GOOD ONE. AND THEN AFTER THAT, IT JUST TOOK OFF WITH LOTS OF SMALLER QUAKES AFTER THAT. AND THEN YOU HAVE THIS ONE THAT OCCURRED THIS MORNING AT 318, AND THAT WAS A 5.2 MAGNITUDE. SO AGAIN, A PRETTY STRONG ONE THAT WAS FELT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF AREA HERE. YOU CAN SEE THAT. DID YOU FEEL IT MAP HERE BY THE USGS SHOWING THAT EVEN ALL THE WAY DOWN PAST STOCKTON AND MODESTO, PEOPLE WERE REPORTING THAT THEY FELT THAT EARTHQUAKE YESTERDAY. BACK OVER TO YOU. LISA, WE REALLY FELT IT HERE IN THE STUDIO.
