Main Purpose of Job

The Suicide Prevention Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of activities as outlined in the Suicide Prevention Plan (SPP) and supports related suicide prevention programming. The Coordinator also serves as the point of contact for general suicide prevention activities at HCHD as a liaison with the Maryland State Office of Suicide Prevention.

Primary duties include:
  • Organizes and leads suicide prevention program planning efforts, to include the convening of community stakeholders to establish a community-based coalition; 
  • Management and oversight of CAMS-care grant to provide training for County clinicians in an evidence-based assessment and treatment framework for suicide prevention;
  • Synthesizes stakeholder data and feedback to identify opportunities to expand the suicide prevention work plan, including opportunities to implement evidence-based interventions;
  • Coordinates with community stakeholders and the Local Health Improvement Coalition for strategic planning initiatives related to suicide prevention activities; 
  • Educates community members and providers on Howard County’s suicide prevention campaigns for reducing stigma and increasing dialogue about suicide across the lifespan; 
  • Leads implementation of Sources of Strength peer leadership program, including facilitation of adult advisor and student leadership teams;
  • Designs and shares relevant content for the Teen Health Matters website, podcasts, and other HCHD social media outlets;
  • Oversees short- and long-term grant projects as appropriate, including CAMS-Care community training;
  • Collaborates with community groups and represents the HCHD at health/resource fairs;
  • Assists in supervision of student interns;
  • Provides consultation and linkage to care for service providers and consumers in need of resources along the suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention continuum; 
  • Serves as representative on community teams, including the Child Fatality Review Team and Mental Health Community Advisory Council.

This position is eligible for hybrid telework. 

POSITION DUTIES

50% Coordinator - Suicide Prevention Program 
  • Organizes and leads suicide prevention program planning efforts in collaboration with community stakeholders; 
  • Management and oversight of CAMS-care grant to provide training for County clinicians in an evidence-based assessment and treatment framework for suicide prevention;
  • Leads implementation of Sources of Strength peer leadership program, including facilitation of adult advisor and student leadership teams;
  • Manages and maintains the Teen Health Matters website with mental health and suicide prevention information, including crisis hotline/resources, suicide warning signs and helpful tips to engage the community;
  • Maintains the suicide prevention work plan with updated revisions in collaboration with the Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC) strategic plan;
  • Researches and maintains awareness of latest evidence-based practices in suicide prevention and intervention to inform planning activities;
  • Coordinates suicide prevention marketing campaign and strategies;
  • Consults with the Behavioral Health Navigator (BHN) for clinical support and guidance on BHN needs to support a coordinated system of care for consumers.

20% Conduct Community Outreach and Education
  • Conducts community education/presentations on suicide prevention and related outreach;
  • Maintains list of community groups/contacts for suicide prevention training, including CAMS trained providers;
  • Links providers and consumers with specialized resources along the suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention continuum as needed; 
  • Maintains content on the Teen Health Matters website for mental health and suicide prevention programming in conjunction with other staff;
  • Serves as a liaison to community groups for the continuous improvement of services to consumers.

18% Compile and disseminate necessary program information
  • Compiles and analyzes program metrics;
  • Develops and communicates messaging to promote programs for digital and online media.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

ExperienceTwo years of experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications: 
  • Familiarity with crisis intervention services and/or suicide prevention resources.
  • Experience addressing racial disparities, barriers, or challenges that affect behavioral health equity. 
  • Experience collaborating with behavioral health providers, community members, and colleagues who are looking for resources or treatment services related to mental health and/or suicidality.
  • Experience with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Experience with writing professional documents, such as grants, proposals, and reports.
  • Experience overseeing the implementation of grant-funded projects.
  • Experience communicating information about initiatives and data trends, including public speaking using power-point presentations to professionals and the general public. 
  • Experience developing projects independently and working as a team-member. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker, Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Maryland Department of Health Testing Unit.

2. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
