CT hires misinformation specialist for $150K

The state is hiring a misinformation specialist to “monitor and combat election misinformation” ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

The security analyst position, which pays $150,000, is part of Secretary of the State Denise Merrill’s #TrustedInfo2022 campaign. Merrill’s office is encouraging people to base their voting decisions on trusted sources of information.

The 2020 presidential elections were hampered by the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories online. The federal government recently created a disinformation-fighting arm of the Department of Homeland Security, but dissolved it amid controversy.

Merrill’s office hired a misinformation specialist for the 2020 election to identify, report and combat election misinformation online and in social media.

Funding for the new position is included in Gov. Ned Lamont's budget

"Over the last few election cycles, malicious foreign actors have demonstrated the motivation and capability to significantly disrupt election activities, thus undermining public confidence in the fairness and accuracy of election results,” the document says.
