Description

The overall goal of this position is to build the client’s confidence. This position will be assigned to provide nonvisual instruction in home maintenance, industrial arts, basic plumbing and electricity, and basic woodworking. Instruction is provided to adult clients of the Nebraska Center for the Blind using Structured Discovery teaching methods. Home maintenance tasks may include unclogging drains, changing light bulbs, repairing dry wall, changing furnace filters, rewiring and replacing electrical faceplates, drilling holes, sanding, patching, painting, etc. Power tool usage includes drill press, radial arm saw, and table saw. The Industrial Arts/Shop instructor also supports the training provided in other areas of the Center (Braille, Cane Travel, Home Management, Technology). Work requires use of hand and power tools and the ability to teach the use of this equipment using nonvisual techniques. Occasionally exposed to service animals. Regularly participates in community-based activities to role model alternative techniques.

Examples of Work

Assess students’ abilities to use nonvisual skills to perform basic tasks of woodworking and home repairs. In collaboration with students, develop goals to gain nonvisual skills to perform basic woodworking, home repair, problem-solving, and planning skills. Monitor and report on student progress, following documentation procedures and meeting established deadlines. Develop weekly and monthly lesson plans to ensure students are progressing through the curriculum and developing nonvisual skills to perform basic woodworking and home repair using hand and power tools. Support the mission and philosophy of the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NCBVI) by utilizing Structured Discovery teaching methods to demonstrate nonvisual techniques for performing tasks related to woodworking, making repairs, and participating in community-based activities. Assist students in developing a positive attitude about blindness. Reinforce the nonvisual techniques learned in other classes at the Center, including Braille, screen readers, and the long white cane, and incorporate these skills in Shop class. Ensure safety practices are followed when using power tools, equipment, and chemicals, and inspect/maintain equipment in the Shop. Participate in staff meetings, agency-wide trainings, and student progress checks. Accurately track work hours to bill to the appropriate grant. Request, order, and track supplies for students. Substitute occasionally in other classes at the Nebraska Center for the Blind, including Braille, Cane Travel, Home Management, and Technology. Collaborate with other NCBVI staff to ensure a smooth transition between NCBVI programs and the client’s next step following graduation from the Nebraska Center for the Blind. Occasionally lead and participate in philosophical discussions to promote acceptance of blindness and develop strategies for dealing effectively with the public’s misconceptions about blindness. Work with clients with multiple disabilities, such as deafblind, cognitive or developmental disabilities, mobility impairments, etc. Provide some reader/driver services to clients. Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification. 

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor's degree in social science, behavioral science, social work, counseling/guidance, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, human development, education or related and two years' experience; OR Master's degree in any of the above mentioned fields or related area and one year of experience.   Maintaining of the CVRCB Certification, once acquired on the job

PREFERRED: At least two years of full-time professional experience as a maintenance worker, industrial arts instructor, or other relevant work experience/education is preferred. Previous experience working with blind adults and teaching using Structured Discovery methods in a training center environment. Possess one of the following certifications: National Certification in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind (NCRTB), National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB), National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC). 

OTHER: Regular and reliable attendance. May require telecommuting as a part of the position. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of teaching and the understanding of the agency's philosophy of working with the blind, various educational modalities as they pertain to the rehabilitation of blind individuals (i.e., Braille, cane travel, assistive technology, etc.); Understanding of problems arising from blindness, counseling techniques used in the rehabilitation of the blind and ability to apply techniques in proper situations. Skill in evaluating each client's needs and the subsequent preparation and implementation of instructional programs to answer these needs. Ability to lead and mentor others in the completion of work, organize and coordinate various ongoing instructional programs, effectively evaluate the results of instructional programs, and revise such programs as warranted; apply specific counseling techniques according to the situation; and establish a strong working rapport with clients, general public, and other service agencies.
