The Information Technology Services Division (ITS) improves business and science with enterprise-class information technology (IT). The staff fosters secure, connected, and efficient information systems to maximize program-specific and/or organizational outcomes. 

The Infrastructure Services Unit works to enable the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to succeed in its overall mission by managing the department’s network and telecommunications services.

With that in mind, 

Picture yourself providing highly technical, senior level, systems administration functions for DFW physical and virtual Infrastructure environments, leveraged by the Enterprise – this includes enterprise server and storage environments, as well as the virtual hypervisor-based technologies that reside on them.

These systems are located within on-premises datacenters, as well as cloud-hosted infrastructure environments. The services you’ll support will include the majority of all internal business applications and resources used by the enterprise, as well as applications and resources consumed by the public.

This is an opportunity for you to act as the senior level subject matter expert (SME) for Linux based application and web servers; you’ll be supporting applications that leverage Apache, Tomcat, and JAVA. You’ll also play a primary role in the administration of Windows based servers and services.

This is a dynamic role for you to ensure all physical infrastructure hardware, both storage and server based, is maintained in such a manner to ensure a stable and secure environment for the enterprise.

With your experience you’ll provide critical support in maintaining business continuity and a stable working environment for WDFW staff and their customers.

Our IT Senior Systems Engineer, 

  • Serves as a virtual server systems administrator, supporting virtual server and storage systems. 
  • Functions as a physical server systems administrator, responsible for the DFW HP Enterprise server environment, providing configuration and ongoing maintenance and support, including periodic firmware and driver updates. 
  • Works to provide technical oversite and assistance for the DFW Enterprise backup systems environment.
  • Provides storage systems administration support and maintenance for the WDFW Enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) environment hosted on premise. 
  • Manages server storage volume maintenance and support, providing support for storage resources at the OS level. 
  • Serves as a cloud hosted storage systems administrator, supporting cloud-based storage infrastructure resources.
  • Monitors server and storage systems, configuring and supporting monitoring controls on DFW storage area network and on server systems hardware. 
  • Provides application and database systems monitoring configuration and support.
  • Provides WDFW Service desk staff monitoring dashboards and ensures system-based alerts are forwarded to the appropriate staff.
  • Coordinates the implementation of new applications deployments as well as upgrades to existing applications for both the Linux and Windows application server environments. 
  • Supports reverse proxy configuration running on Linux Apache web server and coordinate Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate implementations and renewals. 
  • Manages existing SSL and code signing certificates and works with CTS as well as third part certificate authorities on the acquisition and implementation of new security certificates to be used on both in house and public facing web applications.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Work is performed in a general office environment, with a workstation in cubical. 
    2. Occasional work takes place in a datacenter.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Periodic travel for training or workshops.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. General office equipment and hand tools such as screwdriver.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent interaction with Application Development and Program IT staff and customers.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least seven (7) years of server systems administration experience in a Linux and/or Unix environment, supporting mission critical services for an enterprise.

             AND

  • At least seven (7) years of experience managing virtual server systems running on enterprise class virtual hyper-visors, such as  VMware or Hyper-V. 

AND 

  • At least seven (7) of experience supporting physical server infrastructure hardware.


 

Knowledge of:

  • Server Hardware Configuration and Management.
  • Storage Hardware Configuration and Management.
  • Virtualization technologies for servers. 
  • Linux and Windows server OS configuration and management.
  • Web services configuration and management.
  • Monitoring Systems Configuration and management. 

 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or other related field AND three (3) years of qualifying professional IT experience.

OR

  • Associate’s degree in Computer Engineering, Information Technology or other related field AND five (5) years of qualifying professional IT experience.

OR

  • Seven (7) or more years of recent professional qualifying IT experience.

 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Technical Certifications in Linux, Windows, storage, or cloud-based technologies.

 

Job knowledge and experience with:

  • Networking and a clear understanding of security, switches, routers, VLANS, DNS and DHCP.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness
If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Holidays
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.

Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

Sick Leave
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.

Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.


As provided in WAC 357-58-175, an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165. 

Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, are entitled to three (3) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
