DESCRIPTION


The Santa Barbara Public Library is offering paid internship positions for teens at the Central and Eastside Libraries. Over the course of this internship, the teen intern will work with Library Staff and develop social-emotional & career development skills. Candidates have the option to choose between two learning tracks: Library Services Track and Maker Entrepreneurship Track.

Library Services Track
  • Interns are introduced to various jobs in the library, including IT, administrative, collection work, marketing, early literacy, STEAM programming for youth, outreach, etc.
  • Interns will be paired with Library staff to job shadow and contribute to projects in various parts of the Library
Maker Entrepreneurship Track
  • Interns will be trained in financial literacy, target markets, identifying business opportunities, and brand identity
  • Interns will develop a business plan

Job duties will include:
The Library Services track will participate in developing youth and teen programs, producing social media content or writing for the Library’s blog, curating and maintaining collection displays, supporting summer reading, materials circulation, and related library tasks.

The Maker Entrepreneurship Track will focus on developing business plans, budgeting skills, and prototyping their products.

Teens would serve as peer leaders for the Library’s weekly volunteer TAB Meetings at Central or Eastside Library, participate in small group workshops with their intern cohort learning and career development skills, and work on their individual or team projects (maker entrepreneurship or library services). Cohort learning sessions will feature presentations from outside professionals in addition to sessions led by Library staff.

Teen interns will be expected to communicate scheduling needs clearly, share feedback and ideas, and feel comfortable speaking with the public in a friendly and professional manner, especially with children and fellow teens. Ideal candidates should be enthusiastic about the Library and working collaboratively in a team setting. Bilingual (Spanish/English) communication skills are highly desirable.

Time commitment: 15 hours a week for the months of June - August or reference the quarterly teen intern cohorts until April 2024.

Flexible between the hours of 10am - 6pm Monday-Saturday. Saturday hours preferred. Some mandatory hours for cohort learning will be set.

Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate Library website

  • Be 16 years of age with ability to secure a work permit and enrolled in high school
