Position Summary

The Librarian-I is responsible for providing basic professional reference assistance.  Develops, maintains and market library collection of books and other materials; assists library users in locating, obtaining, and using information and other materials, both in the library and remotely, and participates in planning and delivering programs for the library's users.

 

A Librarian-I is distinguished from a Librarian-II by the Librarian–II’s requirement of a Master’s Degree in Library Science.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education:   Bachelor's Degree

            For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study:    History or any related field, Anthropology, Communication or any related field, Literature or any related field, English or any related field, Linguistics, Philosophy, Sociology or any related field, Education or any related field, Instructional Technology and Training or any related field, Fine Arts or any related field, any STEM field.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  Two years experience working in a library setting or experience with any combination of similar experience in program development, event planning, teaching, inventory selection or management, book store experience, or technical customer service experience in any industry. A Master's Degree in Library Science may be substituted for all required education and experience. Education and/or experience preferences:  Public library experience preferred.

Driver’s License requirement:    Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License     Required Endorsements:  None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations:   New Mexico Library Certificate

Essential Functions

Knowledge:   Basic principles and procedures of professional library work, including methods, practices, and techniques of library classification, cataloging, and references, collections, systems and online applications; Computerized cataloging, bibliographical, and circulation system databases; and basic reference tools and services; Standard bibliographic sources, the on-line cataloging databases, Materials and services available in public libraries; Professional library publications and the literature of librarianship.

Skills:        Use of technology, equipment and software program applications.  Operate standard office equipment. 

Abilities:   Communicate with, and respond pleasantly to, a demanding and diverse public; Work well with children, teen, and adult patrons; Remain calm and efficient under pressure at the public service desk; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; a Develop, schedule, and conduct training to meet current customer needs. Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands; communicate effectively in verbal and written form. 

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities:   Internal:  Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and customers. Work with library staff on special projects and promotions.  External:     Assists library customers in person and remotely to locate requested information or use library resources in print, in other formats, and online.
