Examples of Duties

Day in the life: Work independently and on a team picking up garbage, recycling and yard waste in our Public Works Sanitation Section.  

  • Collect refuse from homes with a Honda Pioneer 
  • Rerun routes for late collections 
  • Work closely with a refuse truck driver 
  • Heavy lifting on a repeated basis
Seasonal employment: Steady work with a regular 4 day schedule. Our Sanitation section love Wednesdays off! Work hours can change during winter months or when department needs dictate.

  • 40hrs/week
  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
  • 10 hour days: 6:30am-5pm
  • 9 months per year

Qualifications

  • 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license ability to drive safely
  • Sound physical condition in order to perform heavy manual work in all types of weather

In their first year of employment, seasonal employees will receive one (1) paid time off work shift after three (3) months and a second paid time off shift after 6 months of employment. Seasonal employees shall receive a total of two (2) paid time off work shifts when they return for subsequent seasons.

Those working 1,000 hours or more during a calendar year are also enrolled in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension program, contributing 4.5% of salary into the program.
