The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is seeking undergraduate interns to work in our office.

Who may apply: Undergraduate Students who are enrolled in higher education or enrolled for the Fall 2022 session. Due to the training involved, we request that applicants be available to work for a minimum of six months. 

Work Location: Multiple locations in King County

Salary: Range 24, Step 1 : $17.72 hourly  

Work Schedule: Our office is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Students may work 12 hours per week during the school year and up to 35 hours per week (as needed) during the summer break.

 Below is a listing of the intern opportunities we have at this time:
 

Criminal Division, Protection Order Advocacy Program, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104  or Maleng Regional Justice Center, 401 Fourth Ave N, Kent 98032 -1 position:

The Protection Order Advocacy Program is an innovative unit dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence determine eligibility and safety of filing for a domestic violence file for a civil domestic violence protection order.  

Criminal Division, General Crime Unit, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104 , 2 positions: 

The General Crimes Unit (GCU) handles felony trials and files charges in a variety of cases, such as Assault 3, Felony Harassment, Burglaries, Car Theft, Unlawful Firearm Possession, Escape, and Narcotics Deliveries. GCU is located in the King County Courthouse in Seattle. 

Criminal Division, Records Unit, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104  – 1 position:

The Records Unit prepares and processes necessary documents in preparation of criminal court calendars. Once the calendars are completed, staff enters the information into our case management system in a quick and efficient manner.

Criminal Division, Sexually Violent Predator Unit, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104 – 1 position:

The SVP Unit reviews referrals from the Department of Corrections to determine whether the individuals meet the criterion of a sexually violent predator as defined in the SVP statute. If the individual meets the definition of a sexually violent predator, we file a petition in court and attempt to civilly commit him or her to a mental health institution for treatment. Our work involves a variety of issues surrounding the mental condition and dangerousness of the people we commit. We work extensively with sex offender treatment providers as well as law enforcement officials and crime victims. 

Information Technology Support Services, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104, 1 position:

Our Information Technology Support Services - ITSS  Team is excited to mentor and grow an intern. We have several IT Strategies to include, Records and Information Management, Visual Performance Management and a intentional focus on Equity and Social justice.
Our intern will experience a balance of knowledge, skills and abilities growth through learning and doing related to business process improvement, Lean, Records and information Management and technology strategy and implementation.

Sentence Review Unit, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave, Seattle 98104, 1 position: 
The Sentence Review Unit (SRU) has three primary categories of cases in which the Unit reviews and responds:
  • Clemency petitions filed with the Governor’s Office by incarcerated individuals,  
  • Indeterminate Sentence Review Board (ISRB) cases where an individual was incarcerated before 1984 and has a hearing set to determine releasability, and 
  • 6164/RCW 36.27.130 request where an incarcerated person ask the Prosecutor to review their case in the interest of justice.  
Other categories of cases this team may review include wrongful convictions claims as well as non-DNA innocence claims.  The SRU intern would assist the team with reviews and responses to the body of work described above.  


This is a combination receptionist/clerical position to include:

  • Receive calls by telephone and provide information to the public in accordance with PAO policy
  • Work within PbK MyView/Reminders to manage daily requests; verify all documents have been received; scan and upload into PbK
  • Manage closed disc electronic evidence
  • Monitor and distribute faxes for DCU
  • Assisting Discovery Paralegal managing discs 
  • Help maintain inventory and order office supplies for the District Court Unit (to include Redmond and MRJC)
  • Help maintain paper for the 5th floor of KCCH
  • Coordinate shredding company for 5th floor of KCCH
  • Help request repair services for copy machine and printers
  • Provide back-up to the Criminal Division front reception;  breaks/lunches, minimum 1 day/week or as needed
  • Interact with the Courts, the Clerk's office, law enforcement, defense attorneys, and the rest of the PAO
  • Retrieve information from several record keeping systems: PbK, DISCIS, SCOMIS, ECR, etc.
  • Provide assistance to the staff supervisor
  • Assist with special projects as they arise

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Strong verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Written communications skills, including the ability to communicate information succinctly and clearly in written formats.
  • Ability to file alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with management, co-workers, attorneys, law enforcement, and the general public.
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Customer service skills in person and via telephone (discretion, patience, etiquette, professionalism). 
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member while using initiative, attention to detail and follow through with work assignments.
  • Ability to maintain security, confidentiality, and discretion involving highly critical matters at all times.  
  • Competent in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook and Word. Knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint is a plus.
