OVERVIEW OF ROLE:  

This position is a dynamic role that is part of a team of professionals who manage the natural areas of the Parks and Recreation system.  Gain work experience across multiple disciplines including IPM/restoration, wildlife management, community engagement and natural lands maintenance. This is a great learning opportunity for someone who wants to gain experience towards a career in natural lands management.  


The starting pay for this position is $18.31 - $22.38/hour, commensurate with experience. 


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Restoration: 

  • Removes noxious and invasive weeds by utilizing assorted mechanical methods (digging, hand pulling, whipping, tractor and mower operation, chainsaw) and by chemical control (backpack spraying, wicking, stump treatments).  May implement biological and cultural control methods.   
  • Assists with restoration projects such as native tree/forb planting, watering duties, re-seeding, seed collection, mulching, mitigation work and wildlife habitat enhancements. 

 

Wildlife Management: 

  • Performs wildlife surveys such as early morning prairie dog counts, ANS monitoring, bird observations and evening frog surveys.   
  • Performs wildlife mitigation with a focus on prairie dog management including relocation and utilizing exclusionary measures such as installing and maintaining barriers.    

 

Community Engagement: 

  • Assists with volunteer, jail crew, youth crew and community service projects. 
  • Assists with public environmental education and outreach programs including tabling and trail monitoring.    

 

Natural Lands Maintenance:

  • Performs trash removal and restroom maintenance. 
  • Assists with maintenance and construction of infrastructure including fencing, trails and signage.   

 

Reporting & Communications: 

  • Maintains detailed records of work performed and resources used.  Performs data entry and provides information for reports. 
  • Utilizes technology to collect and update data. 

Other :

  • Works within a crew to maximize project completion, team cohesion and individual contribution.  
  • Operates a city vehicle; possibly four-wheel drive; possibly on rough terrain. 
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent injuries and accidents.  Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials and equipment.  Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.  Reports all accidentsinjuries or damage to city property. 
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all policies and reporting infractions.  
  • Participates in professional trainings and development.  

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must have a valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.  
  • Acceptable background information, including criminal history. 
  • Ability and willingness to perform a wide range of manual and physically demanding tasks in an outdoor environment under a variety of weather and terrain conditions.  Ability to lift at least 30 pounds.  
  • Previous experience with and/or college-level coursework related to IPM, restoration, ecology, biology, environmental education, visitor management, community engagement, wildlife management or a related field.   
  • Training/experience with hand tools such as shovels, hammers and pruners and with mechanical equipment use such as a tractor, weed whip, chainsaw, UTV, large mower, drill seeder or pulling a trailer.   
  • Familiarity with computers and office software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. 


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Training/experience with herbicides including previous mixing experience, product selection knowledge and backpack applications. 
  • Strong plant identification skills. 
  • Training/experience with wildlife management and/or surveys especially prairie dog management such as active or passive relocation and/or the installation and maintenance of barriers. 
  • Training/experience with GPS systems and/or GIS software and applications (such as ESRI Collector App). 
  • Previous work as a member of a crew especially completing natural resource management or land management field tasks.   
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
