OVERALL ROLE: 

Under limited supervision, the Agricultural Land Restoration Crew Lead provides support and leadership to execute agricultural land restoration program objectives as well as department wide plans that support all chartered land uses and open space purposes.  This role is responsible for field and project managementskills development, and administrative and logistical support of lower-level technicians and the overall program.  This role conducts field work and guides lower-level technicians in the safe and effective implementation of various agricultural land reclamation actions such as land rehabilitation following prairie dog removal, noxious and invasive plant treatments, fence and irrigation system maintenance and construction, improving ecosystem services such as soil health and native plant and wildlife habitat, and related duties as assigned.  This role coordinates and works with other staff and agency partners.  This role requires hiking and/or physical outdoor work up to 10 hours per day, carrying backpack, hand and power tools, and working outside in inclement weather in all types of terrain. 

 

EXAMPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES 

 

Project and Personnel Management (40%) 

  • Directs lower-level technicians volunteers, and other agency partners on project tasks.  Clearly describes project objectives, methods, and safety procedures.   

  • Provides field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to lower-level technicians. 

  • Conducts daily safety briefings and completes safety logs.   

  • Stays engaged and motivates others with the task at hand for up to 10 hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature. 

  • Resolves conflicts among lower-level technicians and maintains a positive team environment. 

  • Conducts and supports lower-level technician development by facilitating training opportunities. 

  • Coordinates timeframes, equipment, and materials for work projects.  

  • Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.  

 

Agricultural and Natural Land Maintenance and Rehabilitation Techniques (40%) 

  • Installs/maintains agricultural fences and gates. 

  • Installs culverts and maintains/constructs/runs flood irrigation ditches. 

  • Manages noxious/invasive plant species, includes herbicide application.   

  • Safe and effective operation of tractors, mini-excavators, and skid steers for various land management actions. 

  • Safe and effective operation and maintenance of power tools such as weed whips, power augers, and chainsaws. 

  • Safely operates pickup trucks and pulls trailers on and off road. 

  • Performs surveys and mapping of invasive and noxious plant species using GPS technology and aerial photography. 

  • Collects and sows native seed; installs and waters native plants on agricultural land rehabilitation sites. 

  • Conducts other agricultural and natural land rehabilitation tasks as required. 

 

Reporting & Communications (15%) 

  • Maintains detailed records of work completed using asset and data management software. 

  • Communicates accomplishments with supervisor and project managers during weekly staff meetings or when necessary. 

 

Other (5%) 

  • Understands and complies with all policies, including safety best practices. 

  • Reports all accidents, damage to city property, and/or policy infractions.  Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.  

  • Follows safety protocol, including use of all proper safety (protective) equipment as described by the department.

  • Vegetation, Agricultural, Restoration Techniques: Demonstrated ability building/maintaining agricultural fences, managing noxious weed species using mechanical and chemical methodsand operating and maintaining power tools such as chainsaws, power augers, and weed whips.   

  • Project management: Familiar with project management and variables involved including time, resources, standards, and responding to unexpected events. Ability to recognize needs, assess possible methods to meet needs, and act on solutions. 

  • Initiative: Identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner.  

  • Written and Oral Communication: Actively listens to concerns and is open to the ideas of colleagues and customers. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers.  

 

PREFERRED CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES: 

  • Ability to operate and use specialized equipment including excavators, tractors with attached implements, and skid steers and be able to explain the rationale and use of methods. 

  • Experience identifying native and non-native plant species in an agricultural or natural lands setting. 

  • Proficient use of MS Office, ArcGIS or field data collection software. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must have a valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.  

  • Acceptable background information, including criminal history. 

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds in an outdoor setting, often while hiking off-trail. 

  • Previous experience at a land management agency. 

 

THINGS YOU WILL LEARN ON THE JOB: 

  • Wilderness First Aid (if you do not already have a higher certification) 

  • ROV Basic Driver Course and IVES training group certification  

  • Methods and tools used rehabilitate agricultural fields back to viable production 

  • Building and maintaining agricultural fences and gates 

  • Herbicide application certification and proper use 

  • Noxious and invasive plant mapping protocol 

  • Native and non-native plant ID 

  • Understanding of Colorado water law, maintaining irrigation infrastructure, and running irrigation water
