OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE


The Bilingual Junior Ranger Program Coordinator role is for someone who is organized, team-oriented, passionate about teaching others, proactive with communication, and fluent in English and Spanish. In this position, you will learn valuable career skills such as leadership, communication, self-confidence, teaching others, hands-on skills to care for our public lands, and how to manage a large summer program like the Junior Rangers (an early work experience and nature education program for teens ages 14-17). 


In the spring, after completing training, you will primarily focus on connecting with underrepresented communities, communities of color, and Spanish-speaking communities to promote the Junior Ranger program, answer questions, and clarify program goals. Together, we will attend recruitment events, and lead and organize ½ day volunteer Exploration Days so prospective applicants can get hands-on experience with the work before applying. In the summer, you will help to manage and support field and project operationsteach youth important job skills and write public communications for parents of youth employees. Occasional weekend work may be asked of you (if you are available). 


This is 40 hr/wkapproximately 6-month role with an opportunity to return annually/reapply (approximately late February/early March – late August).

Required Qualifications: 

  • Fluent in Spanish and English  

  • Must have a valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record. You will be occasionally responsible for driving minors. 

  • Acceptable background information, including criminal history, is required 

  • Must be 18 years or older 

  • Culturally competent with strong understanding of the needs and desires of Spanish-speaking youth and families in the Boulder area

  • Instructing or Mentoring: Teaching someone how to do something. Demonstrating commitment to mentoring others, answering questions, and providing a safe space to learn. 

  • Leading Others with Emotional Intelligence: Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others. 

 

On the job, you will learn the following crucial skills and experience: 

  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification  

  • Everything you need to know about Junior Rangers and OSMP – including trails, stewardship goals, youth development, etc 

  • Environmental and leadership resources and lesson plans 

  • Supervision and mentorship strategies, including feedback delivery 

  • Best practices for interviewing and hiring staff 

  • How to plan and facilitate a 3-week comprehensive staff training 

  • Additional project management and scheduling coordination skills 

 

Bonus points if you already have: 

  • Experience hiking, carrying tools, or moving heavy objects (such as large rocks) on uneven terrain for extended periods of time in all weather 

  • Experience working with youth in job or skill development programs 

  • Experience with or college level courses in Diversity and Inclusion, Intercultural or Multicultural Studies, Hispanic/Latino Studies, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Youth Development or a related field 


ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: 

(1) TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Youth Service Learning Coordinator  

(2) TITLE(S) OF POSITIONS OVER WHICH THIS POSITION HAS DIRECT SUPERVISION: Junior Ranger Crew LeadsAssistant Crew Leads, Junior Ranger Team Members and occasional volunteers 


WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions including lifting, standing for long periods, walking on rough terrain and kneeling. Work takes place in both an office setting and field setting with continuous interruptions and background noises.
