OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:  


To provide the Community of Boulder with excellent customer service in the areas of recreational management, public safety, and natural resource management and protection. Patrol Open Space and Mountain Parks property while providing interpretation, visitor education, outreach, visitor management, medical emergency response, and code enforcement. Assist with Youth Ranger Program as needed. Prepare and deliver environmental education programs and perform related duties as required.  

  • This is approximately a 9-month role with an opportunity to return annually/reapply (approximately April– Dec).

EXAMPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:  


1. Performs ranger patrol (80%) 

  • Naturalist and interpretive ranger providing high level customer service to the visitors of Open Space and Mountain Parks by welcoming and engaging visitors. 

  • Code enforcement and educating the public about the rules and regulations, visitor education and outreach, resource protection of Open Space and Mountain Parks properties.  

  • Works with the Community of Boulder to provide high level customer service in public safety and natural resource protection.  

  • Monitors properties and responds as needed to illegal activity, unsafe conditions, visitor aid, and range management needs; issues citations or warnings for violations of Open Space and Mountain Parks regulations, performs minor repairs or contacts other staff about unsafe field conditions or range management problems needing immediate attention.  

  • Interacts with the public while on duty to provide information on natural history, wildlife, ecological, cultural, management policies, and visitor opportunities.  

  • Maintains daily written logs of patrol shifts including time/location/content information on public contacts, problems encountered, unusual wildlife and plant sightings, resource damage, etc.  

  • May assist with and coordinate emergency response, including administration of first aid, law enforcement activities, search and rescue, and wildlife incidents.   


2. Performs natural resource preservation and protection tasks on Open Space and Mountain Parks properties (10%) 

  • Monitors conditions, use patterns and events on Open Space and Mountain Parks properties that create a threat or hazard to the natural resources and takes appropriate action; provides information to and collaborates with resource conservation and/or resource operations staff to develop strategic work plans in response to field conditions.  


3. Prepares and delivers environmental education and interpretive programs (5%) 

  • Assists with the Youth Ranger Crew and the Junior Ranger Program and develops environmental education and interpretive programs. 

  • Supports public education and outreach activities of Open Space and Mountain Parks Department.  

  • Assists with and develops Naturalist and Interpretive programs.    

  • Develops and conducts environmental education programs for the general public, organizations, special use groups and educational institutions, including nature walks, audio-visual programs, hikes, and evening “fireside” talks.  


4. Assists with facilities maintenance on Open Space and Mountain Parks properties. This includes the following (5%) 

  • Continuously inspects properties for hazards, unsafe conditions, or damage; corrects or reports problems to maintenance staff 

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City of Boulder  

  • Knows and complies with all policies, including safety best practices 

  • Reports and takes personal responsibility for all accidents, damage to city property, and/or policy infractions 


REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Education or equivalent demonstrated competence: Bachelor's degree in Natural Resource Management, Recreation, Forestry, Environmental Science, Wildlife Biology/Management, Ecology, or closely related area. Or ability to demonstrate competency as a naturalist with excellent outdoor safety skills.  

  • Communication: Ability to clearly and concisely communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to work tactfully, respectfully, and effectively with the public and fellow workers. 

  • Physical ability: Able to hike up to 10 miles daily, perform tasks in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions; to lift and carry equipment; to stand, walk, and kneel while performing duties over rough terrain on a regular basis; to perform basic maintenance duties using hand tools. 

  • Interacting with others with Emotional Intelligence: The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others’ concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others.  

  • Teamwork: Working effectively as a member and leader of formal and informal teams. Understanding the interests and concerns of others and able and willing to share and receive information. Demonstrating interest, skill, and success in getting groups to learn to work together. Willing to help in any capacity. Demonstrates direct, courageous communication by openly sharing successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth. Willingness to report misconduct or prohibited activities regardless of chain of command 

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:  

  • Current Wildland Fire S130/190 certification “Red Card” or higher.  

  • Current Emergency Medical Responder certification “First Responder” or higher medical certification.  

  • Bi-lingual in Spanish/English.  

  • Knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Colorado and Boulder County.  

  • Experienced environmental educator and naturalist.  

  • Proactive communication including written communication skills. 

  • Independent and self-motivated; ability to complete tasks without direct supervision. 

  • Ability to organize and prioritize competing requests for your time and attention. 

  • Excellent people skills including conflict resolution. 

  • Hiking and mountain biking skills. 

  • Resource stewardship education. 

  • CPR certification. 

  • De-escalation experience and or training.   


Criteria for use of Background Information in Selection Process:   

Demonstrated personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as shown in applicant’s criminal history, background, and motor vehicle record, and use of drugs and alcohol.  Applicants who use, possess, distribute or grow marijuana or medical marijuana, and/or own, operate, or have any interest in a marijuana dispensary will be disqualified.   

Preference will be given to applicants who have no history of use, sale or possession of illegal substances.  In addition to background, criminal and driving record information, a drug screening will be used after a conditional job offer is made to further evaluate the stated criteria and to provide supplementary information for the items listed below. 

The following will disqualify any applicant from consideration for employment before or after the conditional employment offer is made:  

  • Any felony conviction. 

  • Any commission of a felony in the previous 60 months (five years), including felonious drug use or possession. 

  • Any commission of non-traffic related misdemeanor within the previous 36 months (three years).  

  • Any convictions and/or protective order(s) issued for domestic violence offenses which would preclude an individual from being around firearm(s).  

  • The use, sale, possession, or transfer of any controlled substance including marijuana or medical marijuana will disqualify an applicant from this position. Applicants must be able to pass a drug screening at time of a conditional job offer.  

  • Eight points or three moving violation convictions, or a suspended, restricted, or revoked license in the previous 24 months (two years).  

  • Any false or untrue statements, or material omissions in the application and related paperwork or during the selection process.  

  • Any other information which clearly demonstrates a lack of personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment as appropriate for employment in a public safety position.
