Teacher Consultant for the Visually Impaired and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist
A Teacher Consultant for the Visually Impaired & Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (TCVI/ COMS) is contracted to provide services to Michigan School for the Deaf student population and works under the supervision of the Principal. The (TCVI/ COMS) implements the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student on their caseload with a vision loss; providing both direct and explicit instruction and consultation services. These services include but are not limited to providing access to the curriculum, promoting academic growth, communication and language access, providing instruction in UEB, Extended Core Curriculum.
The COMS will instruct students on navigating the environment (class, school, home, neighborhood and city) to ensure safe, confident, efficient and independent mobility.

The School Counselor will provide a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal development for students attending Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD). The School Counselor will consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding student needs and opportunities. The School Counselor will promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing information and resources, creating an atmosphere of student belonging, and providing opportunities for student leadership. The School Counselor will supplement the work of the School Social Worker and the Transition Coordinator while supporting student needs and the needs of the building administrator.

The Michigan School for the Deaf is a day and residential facility for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. This position functions as Speech Therapist for the school portion of the Michigan School for the Deaf. The employee performs a full range of professional speech consultant assignments in a full functioning capacity. Considerable independent judgment is used to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs.
