Public Comment Requested for the Draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis: Eugene Mine and Poland Millsite Site

Release Date: Aug 2, 2021

Prescott National Forest officials are requesting public comments and input for the Draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) and Supplement to the Draft EE/CA reports for the Eugene Mine and Poland Millsite (Site), located on the Bradshaw Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest, near Poland Junction, Arizona, Yavapai county. These two abandoned mines contain over 4,500 cubic yards of waste rock and tailings left from past mining operations. All written public comments are due by close of business September 12, 2021.

The EE/CA and Supplement to the Draft EE/CA reports were prepared to identify and evaluate cleanup alternatives to reduce the potential threat to human health and the environment from elevated concentrations of heavy metals contained in the waste rock, soil, and tailings. The recommended cleanup alternative is Alternative 4A which includes mine waste excavation, on-site consolidation in a repository, and capping with clean soil.

Copies of the EE/CA, Supplement to the Draft EECA, and Administrative Record are available at the Bradshaw Ranger District Office(344 S. Cortez St. Prescott, AZ 86303), and the Prescott Supervisors Office(735 N Hwy 89, Chino Valley, AZ). Both documents are also available on the Prescott National Forest website.

To review the documents at the Bradshaw Ranger District, please contact Frances Alvarado or Zakiya Shivji at (928) 443-8000 to make an appointment.
