The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is the Nation’s foremost Federal forestry organization, providing leadership in the management, protection, use, research, and stewardship of natural and cultural resources for the country’s vast forests and grasslands. People are the U.S. Forest Service’s most valuable asset. The organization functions within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), propelled by the dedicated workforce of permanent and temporary seasonal employees peaks during the summer work season.

Opportunities for Youth

Exciting opportunities are available for the younger generation of today to get outdoors, gain paid work experience, explore careers, receive education and training and launch internships to conserve our natural, cultural and historical resources.

  • 21st Century Conservation Service Corps ~ This is a private-public partnership that engages more than 25,000 returning veterans and young Americans each year to strengthen America’s infrastructure.

  • Job Corps (National) Job Corps (Regional) ~ It's the largest nationwide residential career training program in the country. The program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment.

  • Pathways Program ~ This is a career path for high school students, undergraduates, postgraduates, and recent grads into positions with the Forest Service.

  • Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF) ~ A 2 year fellowship for graduates interested in and committed to excellence in leadership and management of public policies and programs.

  • Resource Assistants Program ~ The program engages students, recent graduates, and underrepresented populations helping the Forest Service carry out mission-critical work.

  • Youth Conservation Corp ~ Three to 10 weeks of full-time paid experience working on fun and meaningful conservation projects. Ages range from 15 to 18. There are no living quarters available and YCC applicants must live within the community. If you need further information, you may call 208-615-2726 or 208-488-2191.

The US Forest Service Volunteer Program has something for almost everyone: retirees, professionals, homemakers, students, as well as service clubs and organizations.
