Did you know that as a fire chief or fire officer, you have a say in how new construction occurs in your local area? This class will introduce the fire chief and other fire officers to the State of Alaska requirements for new construction and the required Fire Department Apparatus Access & Fire Flow Review letters that may be requested of your department. You will gain insight into how the new construction process works in Alaska, prepare you for assessing new construction in your community, and make appropriate recommendations to contractors or your governing bodies about possible improvements needed. This process will help ensure your department's success in a given emergency to these new buildings. If they build it and we can't access it, how can we as fire departments be expected to be effective in our duties?

This class will provide an explanation of the roles you might fill; from recruit to company officer, and explain at each level what tools you need to succeed, and just how similar your needs are to each level above and below. We will emphasize the importance of followership, the critical steps that allow you to grow, and knowing how experience, confidence, and trust become leadership. You will walk away with true insight into the key factors in a vibrant, rewarding career.

In 2020, Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Fire Accreditation, Standards and training was

awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for the purchase of a Mobile Live Fire Training Unit (MLFTU) to help fire departments with limited to no access to burn facilities gain experience with live fire training. The MLFTU is a state-of-the-art training structure used to provide a safe training environment simulating a realistic structure fire. The simulator is used for training scenarios for firefighters to train on fire attack, size-up, incident command, hose line and nozzle control, and accountability.

The MLFTU is a 53-foot trailer that is configured to accommodate above, below and grade level fire scenarios though the use of a hydraulically operated second story. The fire is produced using propane fuel. In addition, the MLFTU has a roof ventilation prop, a forcible entry prop, and movable walls on the first floor to provide multiple set up configurations.

Thursday Sep 29, 2022 @  01:00:PM  —  05:00:PM AKDT

Alan Brunacini said, "The two things firefighters hate; the way things are now and change." This class approaches change management and adaption to change from the evolutionary perspective. All great things evolve to suit their environments…or they die. If we had been told that we would be required to change the way we do business completely in less than 30 days to meet the needs of a pandemic we would never have believed it and likely would have refused the advice or simply ignored the warnings. Change in the fire service has always been difficult to manage and nearly impossible to implement without great leadership...or emergency conditions. Firefighters are resilient and talented people who are mission-focused and action-oriented. Why do we resist and fight change?

Grants are drying up but the need for funding isn't. 'Blood from a Turnip' examines a necessary change of focus away from alternative funding and toward finding other ways to obtain needed equipment and supplies. As more emergency agencies find grant streams drying up and not always in need of new equipment, a skill is needed in finding ways to obtain surplus equipment and apparatus. This course will provide information on fundraising and alternative funding as well, but the emphasis is on way.

The key component to a comprehensively fit firefighter is resilience. People are not born resilient; they learn to be resilient through life experiences. Resilient people are not as negatively impacted by adverse events, and when they do experience such an event, they recover faster and are more likely to experience post-event growth. The positive effects of this training can help reshape your thinking by emphasizing the positive and your strengths rather than your weaknesses.

Friday Sep 30, 2022 @  08:00:AM  —  12:00:PM AKDT

Designing and building a comprehensive training program is daunting. Especially when it includes the entire leadership of an organization. AFD has been working to design, deploy, and adopt an integrated officer development program seeking to expand leadership and management competencies at all levels of the officer ranks. From design, inception, adoption, and deployment the program has met challenges at every step. After six years of implementation effort, we might just pull it off...just in time to retire most of the people in the seats we are training. This class is a retrospective of how to conceive a program, design, and implement something new in a department. This class is intended for training officers, leaders, and members looking to make their Departments better in some way. I will discuss successes and dismal failures in my approach to this program deployment. The class will also cover elements of program review and adjustment for those members looking to improve existing programs. This program has been a growth experience and I hope we can share some of the lessons I learned. This class discusses the natural barriers, emotional baggage, leadership traps, and perils of technical solutions. Audience participation is encouraged, and students will be challenged to imagine an environment where change is embraced and not resisted. Attendees should leave with a better understanding of how and when change can and should be implemented...as well as when to avoid change.

Friday Sep 30, 2022 @  01:00:PM  —  05:00:PM AKDT

Fire service functions are focused on the mission of the organization. As leaders in the organization (developing or long incumbent) often fail to recognize challenges to the mission success when the shifting mission of the fire services conflict with the personal values of the membership. Most problem-solving paradigms begin with "define the problem"; Charles Kettering said that, "a problem well stated is half-solved." This class is a discussion to evaluate the organizational mission from the perspective of the problem we exist to solve and then focus on how we have evolved to complete our mission. Discussion topics include cultural change in the fire service, evolving and shifting missions, communicating change, managing challenges, discipline, and general operational disconnect.
