Session 1: LGBTQ+ History of Delaware: We Have Always Been Here
January 4, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Throughout Delaware history, stories of the successes and trials of the LGBTQ+ community have often been overlooked. "LGBTQ+ History of Delaware: We Have Always Been Here” is an effort to bring those stories to light through historical research and interviews with community members culminating into a website. Megan Hutchins, project lead and the Engagement and Collections Manager for the Delaware Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs will describe the project which is a year-long effort to highlight a handful of powerful stories about LGBTQ+ people, places, and objects throughout the centuries and across Delaware’s three counties.
History is more than dates and events, it is also the environment that people occupy. Deforestation in the 18th century? Winter storms stopping the navigation of rivers? Scarcity of natural resources? All problems that Delawareans have negotiated for centuries. In this webinar, Vertie Lee, Curator of Education, will explore the resources offered by the Delaware Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs six museums and their partners in interpreting and exploring the historic landscapes of Delaware.
Session 3: Resources for Delaware’s Underground Railroad History
March 7, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Since 2002, the Underground Railroad Coalition of Delaware has been preparing research aids and bringing documented stories to the public that strive to tell the full history of those who claimed their freedom within and through the state, the helpers, the kidnappers, and the places of legal challenge. Join Coalition members to learn about resources for the history of the Underground Railroad.
Session 4: Wartime Medicine: Medical Knowledge from the Revolution through World War II
April 11, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
In this webinar, The Old State House Lead Interpreter Gavin Malone will discuss the role medical knowledge played in more than 150 years of American wars. He will describe the successes and failures, how issues of race impacted treatment and the important role Delawareans played in advancing medical techniques.
Annie Fenimore, John Dickinson Plantation Lead Historic Site Interpreter and Project Lead for the Plantation Stories Project will discuss biases in sources. This webinar will contain information about sources and how to critically examine them. Although the presentation will acknowledge the various types of sources that exist, written primary sources will be the focus. Participants will be prompted to consider their primary sources through new lenses and will be presented with skills for themselves and their students.
Session 6: New Resources for Broadening Delaware History
June 6, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Delaware’s history contains stories of pain, courage, resilience, and triumph. The Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affair’s six museums use different tools to bring forth these narratives. Join Vertie Lee, Curator of Education and Gloria Henry, Site Supervisor of the John Dickinson Plantation to learn more about these techniques and resources.
