Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Juneteenth in the Park

Juneteenth commemorates the day when the last enslaved African-Americans received the news that they were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation made slaves free in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865 that the last slaves were freed.

Join us for a time of celebration as we learn more about Juneteenth and the experience of African-American Virginians at Pocahontas State Park and within the Virginia State Parks system generally.

We will have food trucks, entertainment, vendors, self-guided activities that can be completed at your own pace, and much more from 11 am to 3 pm

8 am - Hidden Histories Hike: Group Camp 7. Discover more about the once segregated portion of the park. Hike is about five miles. Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Meet at Bright Hope Parking Lot. Email rebecca.whalen@dcr.virginia.gov to register

11 am and 12:30 pm-Storytelling with Sheila Arnold

10 am - 4 pm - Pop Up StoryWalk. Follow the pages of a storybook as you explore a 1 mile, stroller friendly, trail at your own pace. Story will be about Juneteenth and geared toward 5th grade and under.
