XMM-Newton 2022 Science Workshop

Black Hole accretion under the X-ray microscope

14-17 June 2022

European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC)

Rationale

The meeting will focus on black hole accretion and its consequences, following the accretion flow from the direct relativistic environment of the black holes out to galactic scales. The two flagship X-ray missions XMM-Newton and Chandra are constantly expanding the frontiers of our knowledge. Many further international X-ray observatories, like NuSTAR, NICER, SRG / eROSITA & ART-XC, Swift, MAXI, Integral, HXMT and AstroSAT, are continuously discovering new phenomena. Multi-wavelength observations, complementing the X-ray data, are often crucial to sharpen our view of the accretion phenomenon and its effects on its surroundings. The meeting aims at providing an opportunity to discuss new results, open questions, and pathways for future progress in the field.

Topics

We invite contributed talks and posters to be submitted for the workshop "BH accretion under the X-ray microscope". For each topic that we would like to cover, a few examples are given, although the list should not be considered as exhaustive. Talks/posters submitted on different topics that are relevant to BH accretion and/or X-ray astrophysics will also be considered by the SOC.

  1. Extreme variability events
    • Tidal Disruption Events
    • Changing-look AGNs and other extreme variability events
    • X-ray QPEs
    • theory and simulations
  2. Active Galactic Nuclei
    • winds/outflows/jets and feedback
    • variability and spectral-timing properties
    • spectral and multi-wavelength properties
    • theory and simulations
  3. BH X-ray binaries and ULXs
    • outflows and jets
    • variability and spectral-timing properties
    • spectral and multi-wavelength properties
    • theory and simulations
  4. Cosmology, surveys, dual AGNs
    • high-z AGNs, obscured accretion
    • surveys and deep fields
    • dual/binary AGNs: theory and observations

Abstract Submission and Registration

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission is now closed.

Decisions about accepted presentations (talks and posters) were communicated Tuesday, 5th April 2022.

Registration

The registration will be free of charge.
Registration will take place on Tuesday, 14 June 2022, morning at 9:00.

Due to the current COVID restrictions the registration is by invitation only. We are closely monitoring the evolution of the pandemic hoping that the registration can be publicly opened. Deadline for registration is Tuesday, 7th June 2022.

Please be informed that due to the continuously evolving situation of the pandemic, the COVID policy at ESAC might change in the coming weeks and more or less restrictions may apply during the workshop. We will be keeping you updated, if this would be the case.

Entering the ESAC site

When arriving at the main gate (by bus, taxi or private transportation), you will need to present a valid photo ID to the security guards. Only participants who are on their checklist are allowed to enter the site. The checklist is based on the information you have entered during online registration.

Code of Conduct

As the Local Organising Committee of the workshop, we assume that all participants share our commitment to create a meeting environment that values diversity and inclusion and therefore is free from harassment. We want to promote a diverse environment with respectful and courteous behaviour and therefore we expect all participants to adhere to our Code of Conduct.

Proceedings

The proceedings of this workshop will be published as refereed articles in a special edition of the Astronomical Notes.

Accommodation and Transport

Hotel

Hotel availability in Madrid is quite limited in June and early booking is recommended. ESAC is located some 30 km west of Madrid and it will thus be best to search for a hotel in the western parts of Madrid.

Please note that XMM-Newton/ESA does not offer hotel reservation services, nor has authorised any third party to do so on its behalf.

We will not block hotel rooms for the conference in any particular hotel, but a list of recommended hotels in this area together with useful links is posted below:

Other useful links to find budget hotels:

The location of all recommended hotels is marked in the map below:

Transport

A shuttle bus service will be provided free of charge for transport between Madrid and ESAC and back to Madrid for the four days of the meeting. The departure location of the bus will be in front of the

Hotel Moncloa Exe
Arcipreste de Hita, 10
28015 Madrid

(marked green on the map), which is also very near metro stations. Please note that it is not required to stay at this hotel to make use of this service.

Departure times are:

Tuesday 8:00
Wednesday 8:00
Thursday 8:00
Friday 8:30

Return times from ESAC to the Hotel Moncloa Exe are:

Tuesday 18:30
Wednesday 20:00 - 20:30 (after the cocktail)
Thursday 18:30

On the last day, depending on demand, one bus can be arranged to go directly to the airport or delayed to give participants time to have lunch at the ESAC canteen.

For participants needing a taxi to leave from ESAC, please download and fill in this request form and send it as soon as you can to the email addresses indicated in the form.

Lunch & Conference Cocktail

Lunch breaks will take place from 14:00 to 15:30 every day. During this time, a meal can be purchased in the ESAC canteen.
The Conference Cocktail will take place on Wednesday 15 June, 2022 at 19:00 in the terrace of the D-building at ESAC.
