CEM Senior Officials’ Meet in Delhi, India 4-6 April 2022

20 April 2022 — The CEM community came together for its first in-person (actually hybrid) meeting 6-8 April, 2022. After more than two years of virtual meetings, this week of events served as a strong positive reminder of the importance of international clean energy collaboration. To support this collaboration, the CEM opened this annual meeting to the global CEM community for the first time ever, and they fully embraced this opportunity. In total, we had more than 300 people attend all or part of the meeting, together with over 100 virtual participants and are pleased to report that we achieved all of our objectives:

• Reuniting, strengthening, and energising our global CEM community through an interactive, insightful, and impactful hybrid meeting.
• Identifying and advancing practical actions that help achieve the CEM’s mission, CEM3.0 strategy, and the goals of our CEM workstreams.
• Mobilising our global community to bring their boldest ambitions and best collective efforts to ensure that the 13th Clean Energy Ministerial is a huge success in Pittsburgh from 21-23 September.

International Collaboration in Action

For the first time, the CEM Senior Officials’ meeting featured a joint day with its early-stage R&D focused sister-organization, Mission Innovation (MI). This included joint side-events, the COP26 Breakthrough Agenda, and a US briefing on CEM13/MI7. Joint content facilitated the discussion on how both efforts can help ensure alignment from innovation through deployment and scaling and helped ensure collaboration for the thirteenth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM13) in Pittsburgh, PA this September. CEM also hosted over 10 other side-events spanning the CEM’s work programme and held a roundtable with the International Solar Alliance.

Special Events with India’s Clean Energy Leaders

We were also lucky enough to enjoy a series of special events prepared and run by our host, the Government of India, where delegates could participate in discussions on investment opportunities in India’s energy transition and how to maximise the potential of innovative and deployment-orientated technologies. Throughout the entire programme, we benefitted from the active participation of an impressive cast list of ministers, senior officials, and industry leaders from India. Throughout the week, this included senior-level remarks from India’s Ministry of Power, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of External Affairs, and others.

Even after the formal meeting had closed, many of us had the opportunity to visit POWERGRID’s Smart Grid Knowledge Centre and the world-famous Taj Mahal, courtesy of our generous host. It was an amazing preview of the excellent hospitality that we will receive at CEM14 in India in 2023, alongside its G20 Presidency.
