Description: The environment plays a significant role in breaking the chain of infection. Sometimes an overlooked component in infection prevention and control, the environment poses an inherent risk to the patient, clinical staff and visitors.

The third webinar of the Nursing Infection Control Education Network (NICE Network), Empowering Nurses to Protect Themselves and Their Patients: Examining the Role of the Environment and Infections Across the Continuum of Care will use a case study approach to discuss the relationship between the environment, the patient and patient outcomes.

Specifically, this webinar will identify factors that influence environmental infection control practices, discuss strategies useful to prevent contamination to and from the environment when caring for patients with infections; manage contact isolation for mobile patients and the importance of appropriate communication during transitions of care.

Specific Objectives:

1. Discuss the role of the clinical environment of care in the transmission of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).

2. Discuss the impact of interprofessional collaboration between Environmental Services and Infection Prevention to achieve the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Triple Aim and reduce Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).

3. Discuss the core elements of an integrated infection control program centered around the clinical environment of care.

Description: Sepsis is a complex disorder that is difficult to diagnose and treat. If sepsis goes unrecognized or untreated, it can lead to severe sepsis or septic shock. Though septic shock is rare in pregnancy, sepsis remains an important contributor to the maternal mortality. There is a need for protocols for early recognition and management of maternal sepsis because the onset from systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) to severe sepsis occurs very rapidly. It is important to use the sepsis bundles with pregnant women who present with signs of systemic inflammatory response secondary to infection. The barriers and resistance of implementation of sepsis bundles must be addressed for our vulnerable pregnant population.
