Sandlapper Singers - Requiem for the Living - Charleston - Sunday, April 24, 2022
Two years ago, the Sandlapper Singers were preparing to perform Forrest's Requiem for the Living when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted most aspects of our lives. Now, after two years of pandemic, racial reckoning, and disruptions throughout our lives, performing a Requiem focused on the those who lost loved ones has more meaning than we could have anticipated. We present this concert with the combined forces of the Sandlapper Singers, Charleston Southern University Concert Choir, and a chamber orchestra. The concert and its focus on consolation for the living is the vision of Dr. Dustin Ousley, Artistic Director of the Sandlapper Singers, and Director of Choral Activities at Charleston Southern University. The Sandlapper Singers opens the concert with American spirituals that lift up the need for hope and resilience in times of adversity and the importance of supporting each other as we rebuild and recover. The Charleston Southern Choir will perform a complementary set to prepare for our final piece. The emotionally engaging and lyrically stunning Forrest Requiem is the centerpiece of the concert. Accompanied by a chamber ensemble, the combine choirs and soloists will engage the audience with the Forrest's rising melodies, driving rhythms, and enveloping harmonies. The Requiem for the Living has been described as cinematic and personally meaningful. The Friday, April 22 concert will be Dr. Ousley's final concert with the Sandlapper Singers in Columbia.
Dan Forrest is a South Carolina-based, internationally-renowned composer whose Requiem for the Living has been presented all over the world since its premiere in 2014. A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest - traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living, however, form a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow.  The Sandlapper Singers are thrilled to share the stage with the Charleston Southern University Concert Singers and chamber orchestra accompaniment to present this glorious masterwork!
