European Parliament Elections 2024

The elections of the Austrian members of the European Parliament will take place on June 9, 2024. Austrians with their main place of residence abroad who are not yet registered and wish to vote in the election must apply for registration in the electoral register of the competent Austrian municipality by April 25, 2024 at the latest. They can also apply for a polling card at the same time. All relevant aspects of the election can be found on the websites of the Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Ministry of Interior.

 

One-time extraordinary gesture payment to all living victims of National Socialism from Austria

On September 20, 2023, the Austrian Federal Government resolved to provide to all living victims of National Socialism from Austria, recognized by the National Fund, an additional one-time extraordinary gesture payment in the amount of 5,087.10 euros. Austria thereby reaffirms its special responsibility towards people persecuted by the Nazi regime. The decision, which goes back to the initiative of the Claims Conference, is the result of joint negotiations.

Email spoofing security warning!

The Austrian Consulate General warns of email spoofing on behalf of the Austrian Embassy or the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy. Emails with the domain name bmeia.OR.at do NOT originate from the Austrian Embassy and should be ignored or deleted immediately.

Emails from Austrian representations (embassies, consulate generals, cultural forums, permanent representations) are only sent from the official domain name @bmeia.gv.at.

Appointments will only be given after prior arrangement. Please refrain from coming to the Consulate General in person without an appointment. 

Since July 1st 2021, Visa A, Visa C and Visa D applications have to be submitted with VFS Global New York and Chicago and are no longer accepted at the Consulate General.

Austrian citizenship for descendants of victims of Nazi persecution

On 19 September 2019 the Parliament of Austria unanimously approved an amendment to the Austrian law on citizenship in line with Austria’s ongoing endeavor for reconciliation with all those who suffered under the totalitarian Nazi-regime in Austria. Eligible persons will be able to lodge a claim as of 1 September 2020. For further details please visit Declaration purs. to § 58c of the Austrian Citizenship Act.
