What is Prevention?
Prevention focuses on educating and supporting individuals, families and communities about the use and misuse of drugs and the development of substance use disorder.

BCDAC, Inc. funds a variety of primary prevention activities and programs, as well as overdose prevention efforts, including:

• Community-based programs: evidence-based curricula for youth in after-school and community settings, as well as educational programs for adults and older adults.
  
  
• Medication Take Back Program: promotion of the permanent medication collection boxes throughout Bucks County, as well as the promotion and coordination of two semi-annual take back days to collect unwanted, unused, expired medications.
  
  
• Narcan: available to Bucks County residents through BCDAC, Inc.
  
  
• School-based evidence-based prevention programs such as Botvin Life Skills and Too Good For Drugs & Violence, and other alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) presentations and programs.

Prevention Awareness Campaigns

• Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)
  Brain damage leading to a range of developmental, cognitive and behavioral problems that a baby could face if a woman drinks during pregnancy. (Source: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)
  
  Understanding how to prevent, identify and treat FASD is crucial to individuals, families and society. BCDAC, Inc. funds The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Inc. to provide resources and trainings in Bucks County.

• Up and Away Campaign
  Safe medication storage and disposal are essential in helping to protect children and young people from becoming accidentally exposed to potentially dangerous medications and decreasing the risk of diversion. Approximately 60,000 young children are brought to the emergency room each year because they got into medicines that were left within reach. By promoting messages of safe storage of medications, we can help reduce the number of accidental exposures, youth rates of prescription drug recreational use and overdose deaths in Bucks County.

  Keep your children safe:

  1. Pick a place your children cannot reach.
  2. Put medicines up and away after each use.
  3. Make sure the safety cap is locked.
  4. Teach your children about medicine safety.
  5. Tell guests about medicine safety.
  6. Be prepared in case of an emergency. Save the Poison Help Number (800-222-1222) in all of your phones.
