Traffic Rebounds at Oakland International Airport

Oakland International Airport, now the second busiest airport in the San Francisco Bay Area, reports passenger and cargo traffic for January and February 2021. 

In January 2021 passenger traffic at Oakland International Airport (OAK) decreased 15.4 percent from what was reported for December 2020 as the State of California was under a Stay-At-Home Order and a travel ban put in place in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The airport saw 49,474 fewer passengers than it did in December. Air cargo was up 16.2 percent. 

January 2021 Passenger and Cargo Statistics  

  • OAK saw 270,925 total passengers in January 2021, down 71 percent from January 2020 with 905,817 passengers.  
  • In January, a total of 139,214 passengers departed OAK’s runways. Of those, 102,146 were local boarding and 29,375 were connecting. 
  • There were 12,885 international-arriving passengers in January. 
  • On a rolling 12-month basis, traffic is off 71 percent with 3,987,137 passengers this year compared to 13,330,068 during the same period a year ago. 
  • 108.7 million pounds of air cargo were transported, up 16.2 percent in a year over year comparison. 

In February 2021, despite three fewer days on the calendar, traffic rebounded with a significant increase from January. February passenger traffic was up 12.7 percent from January and was buoyed by the holidays occurring during the month. Frontier Airlines also began service at OAK during the month with nonstop service to Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. 

February 2021 Passenger and Cargo Statistics 

  • OAK saw 305,463 total passengers in February 2021, up 12.7 percent from January 2021 with 270,925 passengers.  
  • In February, a total of 151,453 passengers departed OAK’s runways. Of those, 120,325 were local boarding and 33,638 were connecting. 
  • There were 6,585 international arriving passengers in February.  
  • On a rolling 12-month basis, February traffic is off 74 percent with 3,447,024 passengers this year compared to 13,294,440 during the same period a year ago. 
  • 94.6 million pounds of air cargo were transported, up 7.8 percent in a year over year comparison.
